boiler for 4 bedroom detached

hi all,

my boiler is knackered and i need to get a new one.

i have no idea in relation to boilers, can anyone suggest a solid model for a 4 bedroom detached home. a problem we had with the current boiler is that you had to wait an eternity for hot water from the tap so would ideally like that resolved (i guess the boiler wasn't powerful enough?)

i am ideally looking to spend £1500-2000 on the boiler and fitting

yep it is a combi - a vokera sabre 28. i think it comes udner category 'D' for efficieny so i don't qualify for the boiler scrappage scheme whihc has started again in scotland :(

Never had a combi myself, but if I ever need one,
this is top of my list:

    Intergas Combi Compact HRE:

"The double two-in-one heat exchanger of the
Intergas Combi Compact HRE high-efficiency boiler
has over a period of more than 10 years proven to
be extremely reliable. Due to the separate central
heating and hot water circuits there is no need for
using a diverter valve and secondary domestic hot
water plate heat exchanger. This eliminates a
significant source of possible future component
failures. Less parts means more reliability!"

We'll be installing a new boiler in our detached 4/5 be house in the next few months & we're going for Worcester Bosch Greenstar combi boiler (LPG) 37 CDi. Its a bungalow & very long. It will serve 9 rads & 2 towel rails. We have a lot of work doing so out bill will be a lot more than your budget (unfortunately!) but British Gas came up approx £1900 for the boiler & fitting (not the rads etc).

IF BG have quoted £1,900, you can expect a local independent RGI to come in nearer £1,500.

Your old combi's old heat exchanger has scaled up.
Install an electronic descaler near where the main waters comes into the house.

Consider a boiler with a small cylinder, which will have some hot water on standby. It's a halfway house between a combi and a full cylinder.

oooh that sounds interesting, I am due for a new boiler shortly due for scale. I don't have a combi and I am not in love with them, having heard how often they break down even when fairly new. Are the boilers with a small cylinder more reliable than the new combis, and do you have a brand name I can look into? My plumber has suggested a Vaillant. I have a 3 bed semi.

Combis have been around for decades now and are no less reliable than a conventional boiler. Totally depends on the make/model and the installer.

I doubt it: the WB 37CDi (LPG version) alone (excluding flue, consumables etc.) would cost an independent RGI over £1200.00.

Then either BG have reduced their prices (unlikely) or severely underestimated...
