I realise this is no consolation but cheque clearance will be changing from Nov 2007, according to this article. As of this time next year, if the money is in your account for 6 days it will not be withdrawn, even if the payment is fraudulent.Fiscal drag, that's my problem. Too many people dragging on my fiscals.0

I completed the non paying bidder process for this idiot and he has now received a NPB strike.
The item turned up on my door today so at least i can sell it again.
The muppet left me negative feedback though, nevermind i followed it up with the facts.
Just 1 more question for you all :- does the fact he has receveied a NPB strike show to everyone or is it just for Ebays records.

Im glad your more or less sorted, cant help with NPB. It should show though as a warning to others0

The strike won't show up as such; that's what feedback is for.
If he accumulates too many strikes, it will prevent him from bidding on certain auctions. My TV is broken!

Raksha wrote:I sold a service to somebody a few weeks ago - a course of 6 lessons for them with their new puppy. They paid by cheque, which I banked and saw cleared funds in my account. After they had attended the first class, they decided dog ownership wasn't for them and returned the puppy to it's breeders, they let me know the following day (Mon) before the class the following Saturday. Somewhat cheekily, they asked for a refund, which I refused. On the Tuesday, I received the cheque from my bank, saying it had been returned 'unpaid' by the issuing bank, as the cheque had been reported stolen!! I contacted my client, who denied ever having had contact with their bank.......... So I am financially out of pocket on the whole deal.

Is there anything I can do to get the money back? Is it possible the clients bank have made a mistake?
Speak to the client and request that they confirm to you in writing that they have not contacted their bank with regard to the cheque, or you will contact the police. Explain that this is all in their best interest, because if they have not instructed their bank that the cheque was stolen, then somebody posing as them has been contacting their bank! Identity theft is a very dangerous thing you know ...
If they have reported the cheque stolen they could be in for a hell of a lot of trouble, since they are then going to have to explain how the cheque is in the hands of the named recipient if it is supposed to have been stolen ...

NEVER accept cheques - they never 'clear' and can be clawed back weeks or months later. Insist on bank transfer for bank payments. It can only be clawed back in the first 24 hours after clearing.
I had a very large fraudulent payment sent to me from a presumably phished Halifax account. As did several others.
I was lucky in that it took Halifax more than 24 hours to notify my bank so they couldnt get the money back :-) Other sellers were not so lucky.
As I had not shipped the goods, I asked they buyer for full proof of ID (knowing full full welll I wasnt going to get it) and got to keep both the money and the goods...
Halifax contacted me via my bank to make an 'enquiry' regarding the transaction. I asked them to submit any questions in writing. Which of course they wont do as they dont want to admit that their account security is lacking....So I never heard from them again.0 -
How can Halifax account security prevent a phishing attack?
