I was told this by a notaire/notary but don't have a link for the actual law. This is n/a to holiday rental properties, where they are fully furnished and seasonal or weekly rental if this is what you mean, where the owner can decide. But from experience it's a lot easier than here.
  • This has been a very useful thread - thanks to all contributors.

I am in the process of trying to find a place to rent in Stafford that will take ny (very well behaved) dog too, so some helpful info on here. In the past, trying to rent with the dog has been a nightmare - I am hoping that mentioning the OFT thing will help. I am going to try offering a bigger deposit too, and to have the carpets steam cleaned at the end of the tenancy.

Any other ideas that will help?
Hope for the best, plan for the worst.

Be very tactful if you mention the OFT to a Letting Agent/Landlord. In their minds, they may think you are a potential trouble maker. There is no law that says they can't ask for a £10,000 deposit either.

Best bet is to ask the LA if you can meet with the Landlord and introduce the dog to him/her. Show the landlord that the dog responds to all your commands such as sit, stay, down, away, walks close on and off lead, and doesn't bark. Having said that, it is probably easier said than done to meet the landlord. I, as a landlord, insist on meeting with all potential tenants.
    FREEDOM IS NOT FREE
  • After a week of waiting the Landlord finally got back to the Ageny agreeing to our pets ;). The credit checks will be done tomorrow so all being well we will get the keys next monday. I can't see anything going wrong with checks as we've never missed a morgage payment or loan and we've paid off all the credit cards etc.

We've had to pay eqiv of 2 months rent as deposit and the usuall month's rent in advance. Also we have to clean carpets before we leave but it has been documented that carpet in bedroom is stained and faded anyway so at least we can't be blamed for that.

So hopefully all systems go... fingers crossed sale goes through ok next week...

We too have found somewhere that will accept our dog ;) We have agreed to buying our own door and putting a petflap in it to garden so she can pop out in the daytime, and then rehang her door ( well get a tradesman to do it obviously!) once we are ready to leave.

In fact, I was pleasantly surprised how many LLs had said that having her wouldnt be a problem. Maybe its all these voids- they were desperate? As far as we approached it, having her with us was non-negotiable, and letting agents and landlords accepted this with no question.

Chuffed. And pleased for you too wendy
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast
