dogs and lettings

If there is nothing in the house details regarding dogs can i get a way with presuming that dogs are ok? After all if they minded it would say no dogs along side no smoking wouldn't it?

It seems easier to rent a house if you are a druggi than if you have very well trained and bhaved dogs!

  • If there's nothing in the tenancy agreement about pets then no problemo.
Even if there is it might be deemed unfair if you decide you want a pet.
  • Hi Wendy

You should check with the letting agent first. I contacted a few local agents earlier this year - most had a blanket policy on no pets at all, some said find a house you want and we'll ask the owner, others (Whitegates in particular) were very helpful and still send me any that come in with "pets allowed" on the description.

    Hope that helps ;)

id be interested to see the outcome of this TBH with you.

We are moving to rented with a view to having our very lovely little jack russell coming with us ( shes housed elsewhere at the mo, while we sell up, shes never lived here)

we are looking to rent unfurnished so it woul be our stuff that got ruined if she started inadvertently started attacking stuff ( not that she would she seems to just kip )

Landlords everywhere are saying no, and we are hitting the proverbial bric wall.

Ive never owned a dog ( Its Ohs iyswim) dont they need access to outdoors though- how would you get around this?
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind

    I've been Money Tipped!
I rent privately and have lived in 3 houses over the last 5 years. All 3 landlords have been happy for me to have a dog and 2 cats. I gave up trying to rent through an agent as they all said "no animals".

I can't really understand why they let people with children rent but not animals. Children can do a lot of damage but they don't seem to think of that.

The only problem with renting privately is (in my experience) getting any work done on the property.

  • Always check and mention that you have a dog or intend having one. Never assume that just because it is not mendtioned that it will be OK.

You dont want to crate problems for yourself later on.
  • Thanks all. We're only going to be renting for 6mths as we sold our house quicker than we anticipated to a cash buyer and no survey needed so we need somewhere quick! We'lll start looking for somewhere in the new year.
If i hadn't have been on here i wouldn't have given it a thought unless the details said no dogs, i would have just assumed dogs were ok...

If nothing i on the details and they don't ask can they make it a problem baring in mind its only a 6mth tenanacy? Whats the worst they can do if it doesn't say no dogs in any of the paperwork?

I think most landlords don't like pets in their houses, as they hate the smells and are worried about any damage they might do.However, compared to the damage that idiots like my soon to be ex neighbour do to rented property , a bit of a doggy smell is not really such a problem after all.

  • We are cuttenlty trying to rent out a 2 bed house. We have told the letting agent have no objection to a well behaved dog (I have dogs myself and they certainly make less mess than the kids!) However there is no mention of pets on the letting agents advert. In view of the fact most people seem to assume rental properties are no pets would it be worth asking agent to specifically mention a pet is allowed?
