Problem getting VAT invoice from Tesco Mobile

I recently signed up for Tesco Mobile and had my first bill the other day.

At the bottom said " all prices include VAT" "This is not a VAT invoice"

I rang their customer services and said can you please issue me bills with VAT numbers on in future ?

They said they "Couldn't" and "Don't" !!!!!
Instead they want me to ring them up every single time i want a VAT bill(which will be monthly) and ask for one to be sent.

I said that is expensive for you and a real pain for me.
Can't you just print a VAT number on the bottom and show 20% ?

Are they trying to discourage self employed folk and small companies from using them ?
This has got to be bordering on going against HMRC VAT rules ?

If you have a domestic account then it won't show vat, it doesn't need to.

If you have a business acc, then the bill will always show the vat analysis because it has to.
  • They don't offer the choice of business or residential account.

If they don't offer the choice they should show the VAT

As I said there's no requirement on them to show the vat on a domestic account, they obviously aren't going to change their system.

If this was a major requirement of the type of account you needed, you should have checked before you signed up. All the other network operate business accounts which would do exactly what you need.

Seconded Jon 01. You should have asked!! If you have signed up for a domestic tariff Tesco are under no obligation to provide a VAT invoice, whereas if you had signed up for a business tariff you would have automatically gotten a VAT invoice. Sorry it's not the answer you were hoping for.

  • Hi
As long as direct debit is from your business account it should be fine.i'm with cpw o2 and have got same problem but dd goes through the business account. So keep the bill and bank statement to back up your claim in case HMRC need to check. This is my accountant view ,so please check with your accountant as well.
