I looked at the royal canin and their food is 28.4% in carbs, so that woould be probably much better for him. He has been on the Burns since last July and only started losing weight this Feb, so i dont understand that.

Well Percy's blood test results took a day longer than expected becuase the lab wanted to re-test them this morning when the senior person was in. Hes got one of the highest white blood counts on a haematology they have ever had through, (somewhere in the 70%s) and 60% are lymphocytes of varying size and profilicness. I mentioned that I had been hoping for EPI to the vet - and he said that funnily enough, my usual vet (who is on holiday) had put on the bottom of Fridays notes, "if bloods come back negative then consider EPI" - so it was a possibility !!

Basically, P has got bowel cancer - as definitively as it is possible to tell from the cells in his bloods and the amount and types of them. Absolutely no doubt at all - which on one hand is good, because at least hes spared any other tests, but on the other side of the coin...

Ive got 3 choices really - (well 4 if I go and put him down straight away!) we can give him chemo and buy him between 6 and 9 months at best. P is almost 10 years old, and chemo is horrible for them at the best of times - theres no way Im going to put him through that and make what time he has left horrible and miserable for him.
or I can give him steroids - and they will make him feel much better, eat better and generally have a much nicer time. They might slow the cancer down - and it will give us about 3-6 months (these are all general time scales, not definate!!) or we can do nothing, and he will be with us for anything up to 3 months, but obviously he will gradually get worse.

Ive gone for the steroid option - I know steroids come with their own set of side effects, but frankly - he doesnt have enough time left for them to be an issue - and this way we can spoil him rotten and give him a lovely last few weeks eating whatever he wants (hes had kfc popcorn tonight!!) safe in the knowledge that while its not good for him, theres a limit to how much harm its going to do now.

Really hope that Buddy has a good outcome buddys mum, the one thing I am glad about is that we have got an answer without having to go for anything invasive and painful at his age. :(

    Hi
I hope your vets get Buddy sorted out! Did you mention the white gums to them?
I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

Yes i did, and they said that with the slight (1 score over??) enlarged heart that may be why.

I did notice 2 weeks ago that Bud has a bump/lump at the base of his ribs. I said to vet, and she said to wait a week or two as see if it was a bit of swelling from rough play. It hasnt gone down, and its not painful to touch. We are going back in next week, so i shall ask her to pull out the x-rays and ultrasound done previous to check them over.

What an awful time you are having. Glad you dog enoyed his KFC, spoil him now as much as you can. Take him to the beach if you can, let him have a great time and make loads of new good memories.
