Is he listless or his poos soft? I have two EPI dogs (Exochrine Pancreatic Insufficincy) both rapidly lost weight in the early stages. Vets rarely test for it, but it's very controlable once diagnosed. Only reason I wondered as many EPI'ers go onto develop diabeties and oter immuno suppressing illnesses, don't know about the other way round though!

I also meant to ask is Buddy on a low carbohydrate diet? I am a diet controlled diabetic, and if I slip on my diet, I lose weight if I carb out to much.

This crossed my mind too kazchow. I'd love to know more about how you are treating your dogs as my vet and I think that my diabetic dog may be borderline EPI (haven't done the test yet).

Buddys mum how did his weight check go yesterday?

Buddy had lost 200g since i last weighed him a week ago, bringing his weight to 34.3kg. I have wondered whether to worm him again next week to totally rule out the worm theory (4 weeks since last done)My vet said that it shouldnt make any difference, as i done it 3 weeks ago. When the vet done haemotology tests she said one cell was showing an allergy.

Buddy is pretty normal, he has never been a 'text book' dog. He tends to do things a$$ backwards, and the vet has noticed this too. Im just keeping a close eye on his weight and next time we go to the vets i shall say about EPI, and hope they do a test.

Buddy's diet is high oats (Burns) It is weighed out at every meal time and he always scoffs the lot.

    Thank you.

    Hey all,

Just a update of how Buddy is doing. Well he is still losing weight and now he is 33kg. We have had blood test done including haemotology, x-rays and ultrasound which were all clear. His diabetes is ok(ish), no ketones ( he had that problem last year) in the urine. I feel like we have explored nearly everything with him.

I know its taking a long time, but we have to wait a few weeks in between elimination to see if anything has worked. We are currently trying an increase in protein to see if that helps at all.

OMG - Ive just googled EPI, cos my greyhound has been losing weight over the last few weeks (hes dropped 2kilos and is bright as a button other than having diarrhoea and not being able to put weight back on despite the amount hes eating) - Im expecting my vets to get back to me tomorrow with his blood results from last Friday, will defiaqntely mention EPI to them as a suggestion though as he fits almost all of the symptoms there.... (and if its unusual it will be right up Percys street!!)

THANKYOU so much for this thread OP - I really hope Buddy is on the mend and you can get to the bottom of his troubles, fingers crossed for us all

Hi, thanks Trudij i hope your dog gets diagnosed quickly and you are able to get him back on the mend. I have looked at EPI and Buddy doesn't have diahorrea, but i may mention it to the vets when we go again next month.

One of my dogs used to be on burns as she was prone to weight gain and burns is known for helping weight loss.

Just a suggestion but have you increased the dogs exercise in the better weather. One of my dogs has dropped quite a bit of weight recently and been drinking a lot more but this ties in with upping the exercise from around 40 mins a day to 2 hours a day. The other dog I have had to up his food by quite a bit as he was lean anyway.

Mine tend to be chunkier in the winter when the weather isn't great and its dark most of the time and they lose weight and tone up in the summer when we have more daylight hours before and after work.

I regulate all of Buddys walks, we walk the same walks all of the time. I did wonder about changing his food though, maybe something else to be tried.

    Thank you.

Sorry to hear Buddy is still losing weight.

I also looked into the Burns high oats food for my diabetic dog, I contacted their nutritionalist who told me that 'their high oats food is high in carbs - around 50%' !!!!!!
A diabetic dog should ideally have no more than 40% carbs. As kazschow has said too many carbs can cause weight loss.
