The week before last i took Buddy to the vets for an check up and whilst there i weighed him. I thought he was 250g less than what he should have been. A week later i weighed him a gain and he has lost another 500g, so my vet done some blood tests for his diabeties and it didnt show anything that would cause such wieght loss. And now a week later, i weighed him last night and again another 500g lost. We seen the vet again and he done another glucose test and he was spot on fine.

Buddy is eating well, not being sick. Seems no different than normal, maybe this is something in early stages im not sure. My vet said to monitor his weight for another week and then we may have to do some other tests, such as x-rays.

Anyone else had dog losing weight like this before.

Sorry I don't know anything about diabetes in dogs(although I have a basic understanding)
Is it noticeable where the weight has gone from? My dog was losing weight(4 kg) especially towards the back end.Turned out is was loss of muscle tone through the hips(HD) which obviously showed up on the x-ray. Initially I thought it was cancer related(found a lump-although turns out was nothing more than a fatty lump)
Hope you get some answers soon.
  • I first noticed the weight loss because his collar seemed loose and the bone on his head (known as 'policemans bonnet') was more prominant. His spine felt more noticeable too, so its all over really. Im hoping there is a simple explaination for it, but Buddy certainly isn't a text book dog for illness. He keeps his vets on their toes, and i gotta say they are brilliant.
  • Going to the vets later this evening to weigh Buddy. Hoping he hasnt lost any more weight, although i think he has.
  • My Mastiff suffered with losing weight and dropped from 67kgs right down to 52kgs before we found the problem. he was his usual self, no real problems at all but suddenly you could see his ribs and he looked awful....Eventually after a barrage of tests, he was diagnosed with IBS....

We've cut out all treats and put him on a plain diet and he is now a stable 65kgs...it still comes and goes but we don't have the worry anymore as we know what to do.

  • If Buddy has lost yet another 500g (which will be 2 weeks in a row) i shall be booking him in tomorrow for further tests. I was going to monitor his weight for another week, but thinking about it, i will do it this week.
  • Buddy hasnt lost anymore weight since monday. Peculiar thing is i looked at his gums last night and instead of being pink they were white!
  • A very quick reply - white gums 'can' be a symptom of anaemia. Or shock.
Diabetes is a catabolic disease (dogabolic??!!), as in it wastes muscle away - it's not that unusual for a diabetic pet to lose some muscle mass, sadly. Our diabetic cat, who later developed CRF as well, was on anabolic steroids to help keep him 'beefed up'. It worked very well and had the bonus of keeping his appetite healthy, too.
((I really hope you get to the bottom of poor Buddy's weight loss)) hugs from us.
  • Buddy has had some haemotology test done yesterday and they said he isn't anaemic, blood cells are excellent. The only other thing would be worms and i done that 3 weeks ago. Hmm, guess i just have to keep weighing him weekly and be vigilant.

    Thanks for the help.
