I third the others, came on to say Haggis neeps and tatties all the way! :T Haggis in Lidl was about 47p-ish the other day, was a McKechnie Jess (good make) and was quite big when opened (would feed two adults and two kids especially with veg on the side)

Turnips are lovely mashed with plenty of freshly ground black pepper, finely chopped onion and a little butter.

In Ireland we call swedes turnips and white, smaller ones white turnips ( very original!)

    Thanks everyone

The gratin looks interesting. Might have to give haggis a try - I don't think I've ever had it.

Ah now that makes alot of sense, my MIL and OH always call a swede a turnip and I could never understand it but they are scousers so it must be due to Irish ancestry

Thanks for clearing that one up :D

They are nice roasted or cut in slices, cooked in water and then finished off in a frying pan in a knob of butter and a sprinkle of sugar to caramelise them.

  • My teenage son went farming today for his last day of school and came home with some free range eggs and a large bag of freshly dug new potatoes. That's brilliant, but he also came home with two large turnips, which I have absolutely no idea what to make into?

Any ideas? I've never knowingly eaten turnip but love parsnips, swedes etc. I am loathe to compost them.
