What to do with turnips...

    your turnips look great, well done :)

    they're lovely in a vegetable curry, I know that's kind of a stew, but curry's an all year round dish imho :D

    turnip is an essential part of a tagine or other couscous dish.... mash them with carrots and/or potatoes for a lighter version of mash

    I quite like the mash idea - didn't know I could do that! :) What sort of proportions would you suggest? 50/50?

    Grate them and try them raw in salad.

    Mixed 50/50 with carrots for mash is lovely.

    Have you tried them sliced and eaten raw? They are seriously delish like that, and lovely grated into a green salad. I also roast them with other veg and have with feta cheese and cous cous, hot or cold, for a lovely summer meal.

    As far as storage goes, you don't need to harvest them all now - just take out some and give the others space to grow a bit more. If you can find a wooden or cardboard box (not tin or plastic) and fill it with sand, you can bury the turnips (and any other root veg) in the sand and they will keep for several months. It can stay in your shed as long as the sand is cool when you put them in, and you keep them away from the edge of the box. Just make sure the box is protected from any cats (that might mistake it for a litter tray...)

    Chilled summer soup. Be nice with cucumber, coriander, maybe a little tofu or chicken breast.
    You could put it in a gratin to have alonside meat/fish and salad or something to make it a bit lighter?


    Could you possibly elaborate on these a little please, bearing in mind I'm a bloke? (i.e. What's a gratin?) :o

    you can add them to jam,stronger flavoured ones such as blackcurrant or blackberry. Just add a few. It makes the jam go further,like adding apples does.

    Trouble is, I don't eat much in the way of salads either. :o
