Recent Word Censorship

I just thought I'd drop a line to say I've notice that the first part of my name is being censored when I'm quoted.

For what its worth (although, not the answer your looking for) I think its fun....

This is the only site I use where my user name is not 'Lickerofthetoe', and only because I joined this before i thought of a user name with a sense of humour!!!

Some people just dont have sense of humour.

And you're right, it ain't the answer I'm looking for. I want to know who takes issue with my name!

And, if the revised policy is to be applied consistently, wouldn't you have thought my NAME would have to be altered too?!

I get a few smiles from it lol. And a few frowns! My elaboration..... I stole it from a friend and whilst it isnt humourous for some, it is for others. just like your username, some will find it fun, some won't .

Hope u find out who has such a prob with it....:)

Cool, cheers, yeah.

It's just weird as I've been posting for over 18 months without a problem... and suddenly the word t-w-u-n-t is being overwritten with exclamation marks. Example: !!!!!.

That word has unfortunately been used by quite a few people to circumvent the word filter on two other swear words, and is a contraction of both.

So, I'm not surprised it's been added.

Perhaps the forum team can tweak your username to something unnaffected?

Perhaps you could change your user name to !!!!face, !!!!face or even the slightly rude !!!!face.

ETA: Perhaps that doesn't solve the problem after all.

PS It wasn't me that complained. Libertarians tend not to do that sort of thing.

The word 'c u n t' is deemed not acceptable. As such your name is clearly in breach. It is a nonsense to say it is a bit of fun.

Ms Face's protestation is about as insane as Channel 4 apologising for a pop star swearing on a programme whose very title included a swear word.

Sounds like some people are choosing to be offended by a made-up word.

I can't find 't-w-u-n-t' in the OED or any other dictionary.

I've got a year and a half of posting here under my belt with this username. Someone clearly has NOT thought this through!

Interestingly in two days I've still not had an official answer.

The BBC don't regard 't-w-u-n-t' as a swearword:

Q:- But what differentiates the !!!!! from people who are genuinely disadvantaged and have difficulty coping?

A:- Potential. A !!!!! could be so much more than they are; they could learn to program the VCR or watch where they push the pram. They could come to appreciate that there's no qualitative difference between Star Trek's Jean-Luc Picard and Coronation Street's Ken Barlow.3 (4) !!!!!! can generate much frustration in the thinking people who have to deal with them.

At it's most simple, "!!!!!" is the construct of a fairly hubristic and misanthropic H2G2 researcher, but there are objective realities to consider.

The British Broadcasting Corporation, to take one example, has been repeatedly accused of "dumbing down" its standards to generate ratings. But it works.
Celebrities are paid exorbitant amounts to advertise products when objective comparisons might be more beneficial to the consumer. But it works.
Deep and "worthy" programming has audience figures down in the tens of thousands, as opposed to the tens of millions for the latest reality TV fad.
Viewers WANT the unartistic tat, they RESPOND to the crass advertising, they buy "The Sun"5. The unthinking acceptance by !!!!!! has, among other things, reduced popular arts to the 3 minute dolly-chick pop video.

Dear reader, whatever you do in life, please don't be a !!!!!. It would be this researcher's saddest day if "!!!!!" ever needed to appear in the Concise Oxford.

Hi there

As fermi has rightly said it was added as many people have used that term to get around our swear filter.

Unfortunately a side effect of that is where people have the word in their username for completely innocent reasons it does mark it out when it's written on the forum, which is what you've found.

Obviously it doesn't affect your actual username but if you'd like to be able to have it show up in posts etc we can amend it to something that's hopefully not in the swear filter so this doesn't happen. If you'd like to PM me with some alternatives then I'll see what I can do.

Also, Monday and Tuesday are our busiest days of the week, focused on getting the weekly email out to so unfortunately we can't always reply to people on here until later in the week.
