How much have you told people/the children?

I couldn't possibly tell my parents and I'm possitively paranoid about my children getting into debt. I think it's a huge mistake we all make by not openly discussing our debt problems.

Oh and my kids know some of it as they are older.I had to say things were a bit tight as I can afford a lot of things now,but they have been great about it and I also think it teaches them the value of money and responsibility.Fabi x0

*CAN'T afford a lot of things now*sp
But they have food in their bellies and don't go without the essentials plus what treats I can afford.
I go without myself in order to give them a better life. That is what being a parent is all about.Fabi x0 -
have told no one, not even my boyfriend, nor my dad. I've told my boyfriend I've got debts but not how much. Actually, that's not true, maybe I did tell him how much at one point, but we've never sat down and discussed it. I don't have kids. I mention to friends occasionally that I'd like to do something cheap when I see them because I'm "broke". That's as far as I'd go. They don't really need to know, do they?... It's my problem and I'll sort it out.0

Reading this has struck a chord-we are open and honest with our financial details, worries and despair on here to complete strangers...yet we can't talk to our nearest and dearest.
Anyone else relate to this?Fabi x0 -
Hi my parents are in quite a lot of debt and have made no secret about it since I was about 16 over the years they have gone into more detail and asked for advice as they see me as 'sensible' with money. things have got a lot worse over the years mainly because my father has no concept of spending what he has in the bank and not his limit on his credit card!
I do think it is good to share your problems with your family but I know people feel somewhat embarassed by it, I am glad I am aware of my parents situation because I know what to do to help and know what they can and can't afford to do (holidays etc) and it has encouraged me not to let myself get in debt to that extent.
My mum seems to have had a lightbulb moment when my papa died few months back and decided there and then to get her debts sorted and I will give her all the support she needs.0 -

The reason for that Fabi is because everyone on here is in debt too !!
As for me I have told a select few but not my family - my OH has been wonderful and a real tower of strength for me. If it wasn't for her I would be out on the street !!
I must add though telling people was such a relief and was a kickstart in its own right. Thanks to MSE I cleared £37k of debt in five years and I was lucky enough to meet Martin to thank him personally.0 -

I told everyone when I had money problems. When I went bankrupt I only told family and a select few friends, only to go to work and someone had cut out my bankruptcy notice from the paper and stuck it on the notice board. At the time I was pretty hacked off but looking back I think it was a good thing. For instance, how do you hide your house being repossessed?

I tell everyone that has a reason to know that I am bankrupt. My family know inc my parents. My kids know the oldest 22 the youngest 9 and my friends know. My slimming world lady knows, my therapy group knows and my doctor knows. I told OH friend the other night as she called to chat about something debt related and I am not ashamed of being Bankrupt. It happened it, in my case, was not my fault and I will discharged latest May next year.
It is not something to be particulary proud of but it is definitely not a shameful thing.
