New to all this but in desperate need of reassurance!
I stupidly gave details last week DVSA which of course turnsd out to be non other than Capquest.
I had debts in late 1990s all cleared by 2001 and no adverse credit history to date. I've reported Capquest to OFT today as they lied as a means of getting personal info from me and then today I see an "unrecorded search" from Capquest last Monday (same day I got the call).
I assume they're going to start chasing me for old debts which actually don't exist or some such but I'm feeling sick waiting for the post and what might happen despite not owing anyone anything (aprt from current managed debts) so pleae can you give me some reassurance and confidence.
    Thanks

    Hey Zeb,

Don't panic! Capquest have a habit of 'fishing' for debtors, and also of chasing old and unenforceable debts via unscrupulous methods.

As you have already learned, don't talk to them on the phone, don't confirm any details to anyone, as they are masterful bullies on the phone. Instead, wait and see if you get a letter from them - if not, you can safely assume they have nothing important to say!

If you do get a letter, chances are they STILL don't have anything to say, but are going to try it on anyway, so come back here and give the DFW Army the details, and you'll soon be helped to shoot them down in flames ;)

    Jes

Thanks so much for your re-assurances. I can't concentrate on my work or enjoy anything cos of this hanging over me!
I've asked for mail from my old address to be sent on to me - I hope I hear nothing from them but I'd rather know sooner rather than later if they're going to start chasing me.
By the way, can I ask them to remove the search on my record and will it affect my credit score?
    Thanks

Not my area of expertise, but I *think* it should only be a limited search which won't affect your credit rating, not a full search which could. Talk to the credit search people, though, not the DCA, if you do speak to anyone. You'd have had to have given the DCA permission to have performed a full search, so if they did that they'd be in serious trouble. Well, more than they are usually, anyway, they're not known around here as 'Crapquest' for nothing... ;)

Anyway, if you haven't accrued or acknowledged any debts in writing in the last six years, or made a payment to one, they are almost certainly on to a loser anyway, as debts become Statute Barred after six years in England (five in Scotland).

Besides, as fatbelly mentioned above, you can have some serious fun with a DCA if they are chasing you illegally - try reading some of the thread he linked to (https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/741653) in your lunch break! ;)

    Hi Jes

Thanks again for relying - makes me feel so much better just getting all this off my chest.

No it was an "unrecorded search" of my last address. But doesn't look good on my record does it?

Nothing relating to any of the old debts since 2001 although I noticed in a 2004 diary I had made a note about one of them - I assume they must have contacted me about that old debt then - still that's more than six years ago anyway.

Starting to calm down and gain composure and will have some fun if I can with them.

    Thanks

An unrecorded search shows up to you, but no-one else. For example, a prospective lender checking your report wouldn't see it.

    Halleluya!!!

That's the best bit of news I've had since the awful phone call a week ago
At least I've learned my lesson about giving info on the telpephone - NEVER AGAIN!

Four days have elapsed since I last heard from Capquest and the letter that they supposedly posted to me nine days ago has not arrived!

I'm disappointed that they're not putting more effort into this!

Or maybe they're only being half-hearted because they know that they're wasting their time.

    Dear dcg67

I think you're position is similar to mine albeit that I'm behind you in terms of contact from capquest. Please continue to up date us and I'll do the same.

I was wondering what they are looking for when they do these credit searches and why they search the old address - presumably in my case this is because my (very) old debts were from that address?

    Thanks

    Hi Zeb1988

This forum is both cathartic and useful in terms of knowledge/experience sharing. I shall keep sharing any new developments as they occur.

I will check my credit file, each month, to see if anything pops up. The 'checkmyfile' site costs 19.99 per quarter and gathers up data from all three credit agencies.

My main concern is whether Capquest have the power to create black marks, even if they are chasing a historic, non-enforceable debt.
