Cancelling Sky - Not in my Name??

Hi

I currently have sky installed at my home and this was taken out by my ex-husband, I have always paid the dd each month from my own account and continued to pay it when he left. I am moving in the next few months and will be looking to cancel sky, the problem is as the account is in my ex-husbands name they wont let me cancel it. I have written various emails and spoken to lots of different people at sky but they refuse to let me cancel the subscription and need permission from him to do this, I have no contact with him and have no idea where he is so this is completely out of the question. Does anyone know of the best way to do this? I dont want any comeback on me, I am happy to pay up to the day I cancel it but not sure the best way to approach it. I am guessing if I just cancel the dd when I move and sent them a letter explaining the situation and as they have refused to help me then this is my only option. I am worried that this might get reported on my credit report if I cancel at the wrong time and there are monies left owing but equally I would be reluctant to give them my forwarding address as this may then link my ex to my new address on my credit report.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how best to approach this dilemma with sky??

Thanks

  • Could you not pretend to be him?

After all, if someone with the correct details writes to them how do they know who it is?

    Then cancel the direct debit.

Cancel the direct debit. They will chase him for the money not you as the account is in his name.

Write to them in his name and pp the signature.

Or you could ask your ex to cancel the sky account?

  • As Rikki said, they will chase him, not you for the money. Can you not log into the Sky account online and cancel that way? It should be fairly easy to create a log-in if you haven't one already as if my memory serves me correctly they need either the viewing card number or the last 6 digits of the bank account number that they are paid from - either way you hold both pieces of info required.

Failing that, if it was me I'd just write a letter cancelling and sign it from the ex - probably get shot down for saying this but its what I would do!

Donsm - I had thought about doing this but problem is I did contact sky a few months ago to cancel and told them I had no idea where my ex was living so couldnt get him to cancel and the computer said no!! They may have kept this info on file so when I write a letter in his name they may be suspicious?? Maybe I am just being to paranoid about this and as they keep telling me the account is in his name so therefore he will be liable for the account if I cancel and nothing will come back on me if I just cancel the dd.

Rikki - I have no contact with ex and havent for three years, dont even know where he is now so thats not an option. As I pay the bill from my account would they report anything on my credit report or blacklist me in any way??
  • Try seeing if you can cancel online as I said earlier. They would not report it on your credit file as it is not your account.

Just cancel the DD. It's not your account so it can't affect your credit. Whose account the DD comes out of is irrelevant.

Sky don't allow you to cancel/downgrade online ;)

like others have said though, just cancel the DD as it's his connection they will then try to trace him (firstly through you - but lets be blunt, chances are he's already got himself hooked up with Sky elsewhere) nothing to do with you, if they do, then simply say you canceled the DD in order to stop the account.

Cheers for that. I know you can upgrade so thought you may be able to cancel. :o

You may find it easier to ask a male friend to ring up sky giving them your partner's name and give them instructions to cancel. I know it's somewhat unethical, but you're doing it for all good reasons. As others have already said, if the account is not cancelled your partner will have his credit rating tarnished for no real reason.

That will only work if you can give the male friend the security info.
