Sky+ not working after power cut, is there anything I can do

We had a power cut on Thursday night. I realised on Friday morning that our sky plus box wasnt working. When i go to the planner i get

"A sky + error occurred Press select to restart Press backup to continue without Sky+ fuctionality".

I have tried to restart, I have unplugged the box and let it reset but nothing works. Have I lost ALL my recordings and broken my box.

Is this the power companies fault and can I do anything about it.

thanks

louise

house hold insurance would cover it, but cheaper to buy a box of ebay
  • Do a system reset as below:

It worked for me recently but you will lose your programmes. There was no way round it for me.

    Click on SERVICES button
    Go to SYSTEM SET UP
    Press 0
    Press 1
Should bring up Sky Installer page, select option 8 - FULL SYSTEM RESET.

You could call Sky technical support but from my experience they'll tell you to do a smiliar thing and you'll lose your recorded programmes.

You could try a forced software update.

    Switch off at the wall.

Press and hold back up button.

Switch on at wall and wait till all LEDs illuminate and the message appears on sceen, then release backup button.

    Worth a try.

My aunt's Sky+ box gave up the same error message & I tried all the things above but to no avail so I ended up giving her my old Sky+ box.I gather it's one of the problems that crops up when the PSU is about to fail.
And I'll bet the OP's box is a Thompson. (As was my aunts)

Will replacing the PSU put it back to pre failure spec with all recordings present?
Can you just swap the harddrives between the old Sky box and the replacement?

I'm going to get the PSU replaced & swap it back for my aunt. Her grandkids weren't to happy that they couldn't watch their programmes they had recorded,my aunts main concern was to get it working asap for the grandkids as aunt babysits them while the parents are at work

  • So it doesn't happen again, you could use a UPS (uninterruptible power supply).

You can get pretty cheap ones from BoxUPS [boxups.co.uk]

    You wouldn't even need a big one!

That may be a good preventative measure against lightning strikes but will have not effect on the bulging (cheap and nasty) capacitor problem so prevalent with Thomson boxes' power supplies.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Yes and the power supplies were all mde under subcontract by Samsung. Incidentally Humax boxes and Technomate boxes (amongst other makes) also suffer the same problem of premature failure of power supply electrolytic capacitors through them being underspecified.
