It sounds like the latest 'fad' in new mother advice by the 'professionals'! I can remember having my first and laying her down in the cot on her back - only to have a young midwife swoop in and scoop her up and put her back down on her tummy and proceed to give me a right rollocking! asking me if I wanted my baby to choke to death! that was 33 years ago! my mum came to visit and found me in a right state! reassured me that ALL babies were put down to sleep on thier backs and she had never heard of babies choking on their own vomit!
I compromised - I put her down on her side! and the little so and so used to roll onto either her back or her tummy with bum in the air!
I get a bit fed up with this 'we know best as scientific research says..............' attitude! that only works until 'scientific research' discovers that the old wives knew best and that 'new' research was wrong!!!
I say to new mums - either listen to your grandmothers (who were raising babies BEFORE scientists decided how we had to raise babies) or to your OWN instincts!

    Xmas Saver!
I use water and cotton wool on my 3 month old and I did on her 4 year old sister when she was small. I take sensitive wipes if I'm out in town but if I'm staying with family and friends, I use water and cotton wool still.
I don't find it too difficult and neither of mine have had nappy rash, I don't use boiled water though, just from the tap! In hospital we were given little bowls for water and little bags of cotton wool for use when changing and I've just stuck with that.
As for getting the baby clean I don't find it particularly difficult, and if she's had an explosion at home I just give her a shower/bath anyway!
:j Is MSE saving me money, or making me spend more on all the bargains?!:j

I seem to remember we were told just to use cotton wool and water on newborns, but there was a free pack of Johnsons wipes in the Bounty pack I was given in hospital when I had DS!

so we cracked them out and he was absolutely fine. but then DS1 never had nappy rash ever.

however my DS2 had very sensitive skin as a newborn, which actually peeled in the same way as sun burned skin peels, in his nappy area - so wouldnt have used wipes on him.

i've not heard of any this about wipes being bad for them. well apart from the obvious of not using them when sore. there are so many natural wipes out there and compared to what wipes were 10yrs or so ago, they're a hell of a lot gentler on the skin

it amazes me that everything has to scrutinized these days. whats it going to be next? not allowed to wear certain clothes til their a certain age? not allowed to go out til they are a month old? it makes me think that there are more allergies etc because babies arent exposed to anything!

    rant over :o

It's a worthwhile rant Lou, and one I completely agree with:)

Well...I'm surprised. Most of you seem to agree that the wipes shouldn't be used on newborns. I suppose the antenatal class people know what they're talking about.

But as moggylover says, the cotton wool and water method's useless for getting baby clean from all but the smallest of poos (and this little fella doesn't bother with small ones!)

New first time mums have enough to worry about without unneccesary messing around but if it's what's best for baby it's worth persevering.

I will have to remember not to give advice unless it's asked for, too...!!

    :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Nor did my DS2:) Thing I hated most, being boys, was that if you took too long trying to get them clean they would let loose with that little hose of theirs and spray you and anything within reach:eek::eek:

By all means offer advice Zaksmum, but be aware that she is likely to be hormonal and be ready to give her a hug when she bursts into tears after yelling at you;) It will depend on your lass how she takes advice, and whether she needs it/feels she needs it:)

Congratulations, and give the wee man a hug from me:)

Baby can't have a bath yet till the cord's come off, so it is a bit difficult to make sure he's really clean using cotton wool when a hosepipe'd be more in order...!

Thanks for the hug, moggylover. I'll pass it on to the little fella!

My midwife (who was lovely) advised me not to use the ones with the stripes through them (aloe vera) and suggested the huggies sensitive ones which are just as gentle as cotton wool and water.

Louise - I got a trial pack of the Huggies sensitive wipes and can agree they seem totally unperfumed and unchemically - havent actually given birth yet so just used them for handwipes when out and about.

I've used wipes on both mine with no problems, found cotton wool a real faff. Used huggies with my son but have found pampers sensitive better for my daughter.

Just for my curiousity why can't he have a bath til the cord comes off? Both mine were bathed in hospital the day after their birth and at home before the cord had come off.
Give me the boy until he's seven and i'll give you the man.

So did all of mine - the nurses at the hospital showed all the new mums how to bathe their babies
