I noticed today when shopping in Boots one type of the Johnson's Baby Wipes has stated on the front "as mild as pure water"

My daughter's just had her first baby, a gorgeous boy born on Tuesday. When she changed his nappy today she was fussing around with boiled cooled water and cotton wool balls to clean his bottom (and all up his back:)) after a dramatic poo.

I asked her why she wasn't using baby wipes which would be much less hassle and she was horrified.

Apparently at her ante natal classes they were told baby wipes contain loads of chemicals and asked would they REALLY put these chemicals on a newborn's delicate skin.

I've certainly never heard that before and wonder if anyone else has?

As others have said, this is the recomendation these days. I think we used wipes when out and about straight away (not that we were out and about very much for the first month or so anyway), but carried on with water only for a while at home. Wipes are definitely easier though, but worth being careful if you have a sensitive little bottom to think about!

new born babies are very prone to having dry skin in the first few weeks of life, hence why cooled boiled water and cotton is the best method for cleaning baby's bottom. wipes contain chemicals which are not harmful to skin, can dry the baby further. the easiest thing i can suggest to put on the skin is something like olive oil, sunflower oil on dry skin only.

• I used cotton balls and water for the first 6 months- or a face cloth if the nappy was dirty (I bought them for nappy changes only).
I would use huggies babywipes if we were out.
I never thought about not using wipes until my darling daughter was born 7 weeks early. She had to have an op on her coccyx a week after her birth. We were advised to use cotton balls and sterile water as it stops the risk of infection, skin irritation etc.
But I suppose at the end of the day, baby wipes are easier and quicker. I think it all comes down to personal choice x

I bought some, not the 'sensitive' to use myself as I thought they would be handy when travelling, especially in my bag for times when no paper in the loo. I won't go into it too much but never again. Very sore. I have used the sensitive type, not nearly such a problem.
My daughters were born in the 60's and weren't bathed until the end of hospital (10 days in those days!) Just water on the face and tail, nothing else. What goes around ....etc.
• My son's nearly 2 and I've used cotton wool and water.Natures best for me anyway!Always found it abit scary all the chemicals that seem to be in the baby products.Sometimes more than whats in my own!Always read the labels on stuff before I buy them for him.To each there own I guessbut I'd stick with this one everytime. Was also shown this at the hospital when he was born...
• I had LO in May and all guidance I read advised using cotton wool and water to start with, and I did but to be quite honest after a few weeks of doing this I switched to sensitive baby wipes as cotton wool was totally impractical when out and about, and wipes seemed to clean and freshen him up better. It's each to their own really, OH and I are first time parents and so far we've been told:

1) Not to make LO's bottles in advance - lasted a few weeks before we resorted to making them up and storing in fridge (even midwife said the guidance was impractical)
2) Not to use dummies - lasted a week. Our LO has a huge desire to stuff something in his mouth 90% of the time, funnily enough at 9 months he now throws his dummies and prefers his thumb.
3) Not to have him in his own room until 6 months old - lasted 2 weeks before we realised none of us were getting any sleep and as we don't live in a mansion, moved him into the nursery next door which resulted in him sleeping through from quite early on.

I think what I'm trying to say OP is that as a new parent you receive so much 'guidance' and it's really up to you to intrepret that and apply common sense. Our LO is thriving and mostly from us using our instinct and common sense.
Its nice to be important but more important to be nice!

I've remembered something MSE you can do with wipes. The ones that are only used on wee, keep them and wash them in a net bag with your washing, then dry them and either use them as wipes by wetting them, or you can use them in cloth nappies as a poo catcher. Not sure how many times you can wash them before they come apart, but they certainly survive one wash OK.

And as for bathing, I bathed DD twice in three months as she HATED it. We just used to wash her down with a flannel or, er baby wipes :o She's never had nappy rash.

The constantly changing advice that even varies from midwife to midwife annoys me, wipes such as pampers sensitive or huggies pure or equivalents are designed for babies! Cotton wool and water, equally fine but let's not kid ourself that the cotton plant wasn't sprayed in nasty pesticides.

• My daughter is 5.5 months old and i have used baby wipes from birth, infact the midwife said it was easiest to get their first poo off with them, as the cotton wool just sticks!
My daughter has never had nappy rash, dry skin or anything! and i use johnsons/pampers/tesco

I think you have to go with what you think is right and best for you and your baby, if thats cotton wool fine, if its wipes, thats ok too!
