Yep, waste of time although some do have a little bit of the bracket still glued to the screen.
Vans have much bigger mirrors than cars though and apart from the obvious flaw that you cannot see what is directly behind you, the allround visibility from your mirrors is better than a car.
OP-some cars don't need the rear washer as the water just runs off.If it gets snow on it then use the rear screen heater.0 -

and some vans wiit rear windows, i had a nissan vannette cargo with rear windows and no wipers.
and as this thread suggests the honda civic also has no rear wiper.
i'm sure if i could be arsed to think hard about it i could come up with more vehicles with rear windows but no rear wash/wiper.
not so long ago rear wash/wipe was considered an extra, not an essential part of the car, this need for a rear wiper is very recent thing, thats not to say older cars didn't have them....work permit granted!0 -
we have 4 cars, one is an 85' one is an 87' and the other two are 95' and they all have rear wipers. Saloons and hatchbacks so don't think it is anything to do with having a boot although I agree I once heard that somewhere too. As poster above says, they were extras once upon a time so it could be that you and Joe Bloggs both bought the same car but he paid the extra for the rear wiper on his!
Honestly though, I don't think it matters whether you have one or not (although that is just my opinion others may disagree)0 -
Not sure what year Civic you may be looking at, but we've had three so far. A '97 plate which had a rear wiper blade (much loved and now belongs to BIL as I needed a 5 door for LO), I've got a '53 plate what has a rear wiper blade and so does OH's '55 plate. Love Honda's so reliable, expensive yes, but rarely let you down. Its nice to be important but more important to be nice!0

I used to drive an audi A4 - early model. This was officially a saloon but had a very streamlined back. I did a lot of motorway driving and the rear window got very dirty in the winter from salt on the roads in particular and spray from lorries.
As it was a company car and I was not using my full allowance, I asked at the dealership if I could have a rear wiper added. They looked as if I had just dragged in a dead body and asked them to bury it. Then they sniffed and said, "it doesn't need one, it's a saloon you know, they don't have them."
I pointed out it did not have a box shaped back and collected a lot of gunk on regular motorway runs. I then took them out to the car park to show them. I pointed out it was not always easy or convenient to get out and clean it up on the M6.
They then dealt their trump card and said the design and wiring meant it would be impossible to install a rear wiper, even if I could pay for it.0
