Of course you need your rear view mirror. I don't know when you took your driving test, but it was a big part of mine.
Yes I'm aware some vans don't have them.0 -

hardly essential then is it?...work permit granted!0 -
I have never struggled without mine, you can hardly see out of the back window anyway because of the spoiler.Married 1st October 2015:heartpuls

You don't need a rear wiper, because you can't see out the back anyway because of the spoiler.0

I test drove a couple of the different models of the civic and it is something to do with the shape of the window that you don't need wipers but as others have said you can't see anything out the back window anyway due to the spoiler. The model with the panoramic roof is even worse as I found the reflection from that meantI was seeing double out the back so couldn't judge distances at all when reversing. IMO the civic is not a car to buy without a good test drive as it has a lot of original features that take a bit of getting used to.If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you always got!0

I had a 93' reg civic, managed fine without one. Wrote it off in 2006, worst mistake of my life, was the best car I ever owned till that point and still regret it to this day. I would replace it in a heartbeat if they didn't hold onto their value so well.
Edit to add: got me all sentimental now, off to look for one lol0 -
My 2005 Honda Civic does have a rear wiperI'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0

So why is it only the vans without rear windows that don't have them?0 -
The latest Civic looks good but has some fundamental flaws - most of the development budget seemed to be spent on the exterior and dash leaving Honda to cut the wiper and the traditional double wishbone suspension that has featured on most previous Civics. Anyone see the old and current Civic Type R on Top Gear where the old model spanked the current version? Progress?
Rear visibility is important on something that will be used on a school run compared to vans. The man without a signature.0 -
Isn't it usually 'if the car has a boot it wont have a rear wiper?' seem to recall this from somewhere.0
