I am not sure if I have put this on the right section, please move in need to:). My son is visiting swansea uni soon and my sister is taking him by car. They will be traveling over the severn bridge and she is wondering do you pay to cross into wales and then to cross over back into england or is it just one way and if so does anyone know which way? Many thanks

You pay to go in and its free to leave. Depending where you're coming from, if it is north of the M50, the usual route lorry drivers take is the M50 then A449?? to Newport which brings you out at the next junction past the end of the Severn Bridge and is free.

When did it go up to £5.70 I'm sure it was £5.50 until quite recently.

Came home that way on Tuesday night, had the right money ready and everything, only to be told it's gone up again.

Still at least I mate it past J24 just before they closed the M4 overnight again. I mean literally just before, they were half way through putting the cones out 15 minutes before the advertised start time. Would have been the perfect end to a terrible day if I'd had to go around the back of Newport. (I live in the Valleys so if it's closed then the best route is Old Bridge -> Chepstow -> Usk -> Pontypool)

If the M4 is busy Westbound take the M48 and the old bridge into Wales, the queues aren't as bad there !

    Similar to mkaibear's post,

If I come home from London way I always use this route

it's 20 miles longer and 45 mins longer, but I'm the sort who doesn't care about +45 mins it saves a bit of money, but more to the point I'm not contributing to the coffers of the bridge company. I know the route 'by heart' and don't need a map, and the cirencester road has been improved hugely, parts of it are almost a motorway now.

It's my belief that the government should have built bridge No.2 and either made it free or leased it out to compete with bridge no.1 so there would be some competition introduced into the bridges, to keep prices down.

Interesting route, not tried it myself, but may give it a look if I'm ever out that way and don't have work paying the bills. However as the OP is visiting Swansea, if they take that route, they may as just go the whole hog and take the heads of the valleys road, once they're up that way. Reduces the mileage difference to just 12 miles too!

As a bonus the stretch from Merthyr to Neath is a lovely bit of road to drive on, lots of nice long fast sweeping banked bends, if you care about such things.

Given the price of fuel these days, not to mention wear and tear on the vehicle and the price you put on your time are you really saving money?
