So when you empty your norton protected recycle bin and run defrag I assume the previously listed files no longer show at the bottom of the report?

N.B These VOB files are DVD files so they are linked to your dvd burning.
Fortune's always hiding, I've looked everywhere......

I knew someone who had a similar problem, took days to work out what it was.

His defrag would get to about 15% then start again, every time he tried it did that.

It turned out to be his mouse, it had a "feature" that recorded how far the mouse travelled. You could go into the program and it would tell you how many miles your mouse cusrsor had travelled since you instaled it.

To do this it was writing to a log every few minutes, even if the cursor had't moved, it would write in the log that it had moved 0 in the last 3 minutes.

Every time it wrote in the log the defrag program said to it's self "Oh, the files have changed, I'll have to start again"

hmm thats interesting - i've just got a new wireless laser mouse and keyboard from those lovely people at Microsoft - i wonder if that has affected it?how did your friend fix the problem?
  • I doubt this would be an issue on XP, the bundled diskeeper doesn't stop when there is a disk access.

Probably unrelated but after having a hard disk throw a wobbler this week and cease to exist I've learnt the following. Having been doing DVD/.ts conversions for last couple of weeks I was using a lot of the Hard Disk up, although I was deleting files as I went along at a couple of points I came close to filling up the disk. Apparently NTFS formatted drives don't like going over 85% full or there MFT table can start getting a bit flaky. I ran a defrag to try and solve the problems, sadly it hung at about 45%, and never regained conciousness. I forced the PC to reboot, and alas the drive was no more. Now spending tortuous days trying to recover the many files I hadn't backed up (my bad). The disc itself lookos to be useable once I have recovered the files, just in it's current state it's now seen as a raw volume.

    Ho hum
