What about trying a different defrag tool?

This one was recommended the other day:

    Thanks`... I'll give it a try
  • most of the files listed at the bottom are either in your temp area, or norton recycle bin, unless they are in use by a process, then emptying your recycle bin, and running ccleaner to delete temp files should get rid of them.

Do you actually get an error message saying that it has been aborted at 26%?
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
  • another defrag question... i usually put my computer on defrag when i am going shopping for just over an hour... but i havent done it in ages :o not enough shopping :rotfl: i want to know if i put it on tonight before i go to bed (about 10.30pm) will the computer shut itself down after its finished it (as i usually does if you dont use it for a set period)? only i dont want the computer running all night... thanks :D
  • no, it might go into standby though.

If you have XP, you can defrag while you use it.

Something similar to that ... it just stops at 26% and says that it cannot defrag any further

This is what it says when it reaches about 26% and stops:

Some files on this volume could not be defragmented.
Please check the defragmentation report for the list of these files

    Free space fragmentation = 0 %

    File fragmentation
    Total files = 38,357
Average file size = 462 KB
    Total fragmented files = 2
    Total excess fragments = 567
Average fragments per file = 1.01

    Pagefile fragmentation
    Pagefile size = 288 MB
    Total fragments = 1

    Folder fragmentation
    Total folders = 3,470
    Fragmented folders = 1
    Excess folder fragments = 0

    Master File Table (MFT) fragmentation
Total MFT size = 185 MB
    MFT record count = 42,187
    Percent MFT in use = 22 %
    Total MFT fragments = 3

    401 1,024 MB \RECYCLER\NPROTECT\00467453.VOB

    Any ideas please?

I've also emptied out Norton Protect again and have done a defrag since and this is what came up!
