Enjoy wrote:I cut the sleeves off an old sweatshirt and partially filled with dried rice stitched up the cuff and the cut end. I made them last winter and been using them these past few nights, they heat up well, and we prefer it to the smell of the wheat.
Sorry this is a silly question: is dried rice just the type you buy at the supermarket or is it something special? (I dont eat rice)

Hi csi,
I've addded your question onto an earlier thread that has some useful links in it. The usual rules apply - you'll need to read from the beginning.

I once went to someone's home who had a toasted oats bag, it smelled wonderfully of - guess what - toasted oats!
I have some oat grains and going to give it a go!
Just another silly question:
Do you need a microwave or can you warm them in the regular oven? I do not (and never intend to) own a microwave. Will a slow cooker do?
CaterinaFinally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0 -
i always thought they were microwave only, maybe wrong but the ones i was bought for xmas last year were m/wave only:xmastree:Is loving life right now,yes I am a soppy fool who believes in the simple things in life :xmastree:0

Found this site that gives instructions and so on for both fillers and what to make them from and safety considerations http://www.diamondthreadworks.com/microwave_heating_bags.htm
here is another on using them safely

I've been put off making them by the NZ fire service as many house fires are caused by over heating them and them using as a bed warmer - read carefully first!0 -

Blimey I'd been using mine as a bed warmer/hot water bottle

Sorry for late reply, I just bought a large bag of the cheapest supermarket brand. I dont see any reason why lavendar from the garden cant be added with it, I think I'll add some when I make some more. :-)0 -
csi wrote:my sis has asked me to make some wheat bags for her kids. my question is can i use fleece material, bearing in mind its going in the micro, as my local el cheapo's has huge fleece blankets for £1,99 and i have bought several colours already. if not i have plenty of coloured cotton sheeting in my stash
thanks csi
Can you not make them in the sheeting and make removable fleece pockets to pop them into when they come out of the microwave. I know its a bit more faffy but then you get the best of both."Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and it may be necessary from time to time to give a stupid or misinformed beholder a black eye" - Miss Piggy0 -
I've got a cherry stone pillow which works on the same principle but it doesn't produce the dust you can get with wheat pillows plus you can chuck it in the washing machine if it gets grubby. You can buy the stones separately on places like ebay and make your own too.
