I was hoping to buy a new second hand car, when this bill came out of nowhere (i convieniently forgot about it. :-( )

It's not a bill and it didn't come out of nowhere - you spent the money and the bank wanted it back.

So you had 5K readies to short settle but thought you'd have a case for irresponsible lending?

How is it irresponsible to expect someone with 5K in the bank to repay a couple hundred quid a month?

Totally on side with other posters. If they accepted short settlement (which I highly doubt unless you'd defaulted, sound like bull to me) this will adversely affect your credit (thankfully) and prevent you from obtaining further lines of credit from all but sub prime lenders for quite some time.

  • hahaha, there's one born every minute isnt there.

OP, just to say my two penneths worth - you know a phone call is not sufficient evidence of a 'Full and Final' settlement offer. They've probably already sold the remaining 1.5k to a debt collection agency. good luck with them. I think you should answer the phone every time it rings, and send them a supersized copy of your signature and some tracing paper

You lot are very untrusting to say the least, though what i have to gain with a bunch of strangers is unbeknown to me. lol
I am in a position to pay, and yes i am waiting for it in writing, but after taking the persons name, extension and recording the conversation myself i am confident the agreement will stand.
I fail to see why you are jumping on a bandwagon, ive openly admited i know the right thing to do is pay, im hardly going bankrupt and wiping out 100k+ of debt am i???
Yes i have known i will have to pay one day, i guess with the interest i have paid for coming close to 2 years now, there is room for negotiation from their side, and also charges at the installation of the facility. They can right it off without an adverse affect, and NO I HAVE NOT OR HAVE EVER NOT DEFAULTED.
I realise i have angered many of you at the thread, but i thought maybe a wind up title may give me the responses and views i need.
Wasnt their a board on here and letter template to encourage people who had credit cards pre 2007 ?? The whole purpose was to encourage people to get their debt wiped off for free due to loopholes ??? Hardly worlds apart i think.
    goodbye :-)

OP - if you look on the website of the National Debt Helpline there are template letters for full and final settlements; however these are generally used by people that can't pay...

    http://www.nationaldebtline.co.uk/england_wales/factsheet.php?page=24_full_and_final_settlement_offers

As others have said - going down this route will affect your credit file making it difficult for you to get credit in the future.
