Is my MOUSE BROKEN ??? - or do i have a virus?

My house keeps freezing every 4-5 minutes, with the cursor being frozen.

When I pull it out the usb socket 1, and then reinsert it into usb socket 2, it works find again.

so i Alternate every 4-5 minutes between Usb socket 1 and usb socket 2.

Does this sound like the mouse is not working properly/wear and tear?

or sounds like I have a virus/trojan on my computer?

Sounds like a virus to me. if it was broken it simply wouldnt work all the time

Download MALWAREBYTES (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/
Open malwarebytes and goto UPDATE and click 'check for updates'. After its updated goto SCANNER and click PERFORM QUICK SCAN then click SCAN
Remove everything thats found (needs to be ticked)
Post the COMPLETE log here AFTER youve deleted everything it finds
If anything was found then do the exact same but run a FULL scan

    reboot
Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/
Click MAIN MENU then DO A SYSTEM SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE(Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)
If you get a message that you cant write to the hosts file then Press the SHIFT key, and whilst holding it RIGHT CLICK and select RUN AS (admin)

Do you have a different mouse you could try in order to rule out a failing device?

If the mouse has been in use for a long time, then quite often you get a fatigue fracture in the cable where it goes into the mouse, and/or at the USB connector.

The connection will make and break randomly as the mouse is moved. Try a new mouse, they are very cheap.
  • The above 3 posts make most sense. Why some people recommend drastic and often unnecessary action before eliminating the simple never fails to astound me.
ps. Hijack this gives unreliable results in Windows 7 64bit. (Check it out) This should always be mentioned, but isn't.

I dont need to mention that 64bit systems give dodgy results in hijack as no one should be acting on them anyways

  • Just check to make sure its not your mouse first. Wires on a mouse are like the ones you get with your earbuds.. can break easily..

Do that first before you go down the heavy 'I got a virus' route..

then if no joy do the virus checking things..

Mice things are never more then the mouse itself and the wire connecting it.

Whats 'heavy' about a 20 minute malwarebytes scan (unless it is infected), and a 10 second hijack scan??

If its clean and the ports look fine THEN spend a fiver on a new mouse or whatever

What was said. " Hijack this gives unreliable results in Windows 7 64bit."
If you know this why do you not mention it?

Rarely, if ever are these problems caused by a virus.
I suppose the next comment will be from one of the "do a clean install" mob.

If the OP has a roller ball mouse (did anyone ask?) Hijack This and Malwarebytes won't remove fluff or dust.

A bit harsh I feel!!! Agree that it may be the mouse at fault but as he also says it literally takes 20 mins or so to check the pc for infections, not much time out of your day is it? :)
