Cannot get xbox 360 to connect wirelessly to Internet

Hello savers, I am trying to connect my sons xbox 360 to the internet with complete failure. I am running a thompson wireless router on talk talk network.

Knowing nothing about these things I have not done anything to the router since I had it. The green wireless light is on but I have no idea whether it is sending a signal upstairs to the xbox connect. I have tried using the standard network settings that the xbox menu provides with no joy. Any ideas? Many thanks.

May I suggest that a better place to find help would be the Xbox360 forum? You can find the forum at forums.xbox.com (sorry I can't provide the full link but as a newbie of this forum they don't allow it)

A couple of questions: is the Xbox360 a white or black model? Also, if it is the white model do you have the wireless adapter connected to the console (could be connected to the rear)?

    How old is the router?

I had difficulties getting an Xbox to play nicely with an older router because the router didn't support Wireless-N. It seems the Xbox 360 while not directly incompatible does have severe connection issues if trying to a router that is not N enabled.

Silly question but do you have the xbox 360 wireless network adaptor, as the xbox will not connect without this??

Does the xbox 360 work with the router if not wireless?
  • Not sure if you are still keeping an eye on this forum but can you tell me if the Xbox360 can detect the router?

You can find this by first pressing the large Xbox button in the middle of the control pad and moving to the settings menu (far right) and selecting Network Settings. You should then be presented with a list of routers in the vicinity of the Xbox360. Can you see the name (SSID) of your Thomson Router?

As he says his Xbox is black, I'll assume it is one of the newer 360S(lim) models like mine. In which case, the wireless adapter is built into the Xbox.

Of course, if he is using an older black Xbox, such as the Elite, then I believe that this one still requires the addition of an adapter.

Does your Xbox look like this - http://www.xbox-bundles.com/xbox_360_hardware/xbox360slim.jpg

    Or this... http://www.a2zphones.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/xbox-360-elite-deals.jpg?

If it looks like the former then it will be the Slim model and have the wireless adapter built in.
