tax disc- swapping from 12 month to 6 month??

Well the vehicle is either on the sysytem as taxed, or sorned. If you post the disc back on the end of the month, and buy a new one the next day, you have the new one before they've even opened the mail. So if you ask them to sorn it, and refund the tax they either have to cancel both, or can't do either. I can't see a private company being able to do it differently.
One thing I'm not clear on, if you post the old disc back for refund say on the 25th of the month, the surendered part of the tax is from the next full month. ie, you've paid up to the end of the current month.
Although you aren't in possesion of a valid tax disc are you in effect taxed to the end of the month??I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

That's where they have it both ways. You don't get a refund for that bit, as they only give back full months, and you can get done for not displaying a tax disc, as you haven't got one now.
(And they might be efficient for once and actually cancel it on the 26th when they receive it)0 -

Yep, the offence is not displaying the tax disc, but, no one in reality gets done for that now, but does the comp show the tax 'til the end of the month, or the day they receive to application????
Only someone from DVLA could answer that methinks;)I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

DH taxed his car for 12 months starting beginning of Feb. Now looking to sell the car and wanted to save some money by selling it with 6 months tax.
Have just called DVLA to see if we can send tax disc back and get a 6 month disc. We can return disc and get 11 months money refunded, but have to declare car SORN and then the new buyer can get the new tax disc.
Anyne know of any other way? If we send back 12 month disc, can we not just then reapply for a 6 month disc? GUy on the phone said the new buyer would have to do it - but always harder to sell car with no tax!
Any views welcome, thanks
Just go to the post office with a V10 and pay for six month's' tax. But don't use the car, until then. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0
