Hi
DH taxed his car for 12 months starting beginning of Feb. Now looking to sell the car and wanted to save some money by selling it with 6 months tax.
Have just called DVLA to see if we can send tax disc back and get a 6 month disc. We can return disc and get 11 months money refunded, but have to declare car SORN and then the new buyer can get the new tax disc.
Anyne know of any other way? If we send back 12 month disc, can we not just then reapply for a 6 month disc? GUy on the phone said the new buyer would have to do it - but always harder to sell car with no tax!
Any views welcome, thanks

Are you trading the car in to a dealer?
If so, just take the tax disc with you when you drop the car off and cash in remaining complete months.0 -
Otherwise factor in the cost of tax when the buyer tries to strike a deal with you.0
-
I think perhaps the DVLA will know more about this than anybody on this Forum, to be honest.
You could always ask for more money for the car or you will cash it in.0 -
The only options that i can think of are
1 - send current tax back, declare car SORN, when you get refund apply for 6 month disc and remove from SORN (As would happen if you couldn't sell the car),
2 - factor the price of road tax into the resale value of the car.0 -
The money you will lose sending the current tax back may make the process pointless add the extra few ££ onto
the cars price.
If selling to a dealer you may be able to claim the tax disc back in the deal.
A car with 12m tax will be better to some buyers, I would think you have faith in the car lasting that long and willing to
put a bit more money into it.
Probably wrong on both counts, I hate buying and selling cars.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

It seems very strange that you can't cancel and immediatly retax, even if you do have to go through the sorn malarkey??
But you would be without a tax disc for some time.
What if you cancelled then changed your mind?? You'd have to retax it yourself then.
Another call to the DVLA is needed methinks;)I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -
Are you sure you are going to get enough money back to make it worth your while?
A few years ago my car was written off so in August I sent the tax disc back to the DVLA with all the correct info. My cheque arrived back from the DVLA in October giving a refund for November onwards, in other words I lost 3 months tax whilst the disc went through their system.0 -
Then I would've written to then asking for that three months tax refund too.Are you sure you are going to get enough money back to make it worth your while?

Why didn't you?0 -
As above, you shouldn't be charged road tax whilst they are in possession of the disc, you can only claim back complete months, so the only way you can lose out (in months, not days) is if you send it at the end of the month and they receive it in the following month.0

what a pointless and hassle filled thing to even consider, your life must be empty if you have the time to fanny about doing all that for 5 months refund.
Just factor it into the price you sell the car for, and get a life, really.
Also, if the car gets sorn, and cannot be taxed again until a new buyer does so, then how are any potential new buyers going to be able to test drive the car on a public road with no tax ???0
