See you've already had lots of ideas, so I just want to say that I hope things improve for you quickly! I made several new friends after I retired when I started taking the dogs out at different times of the day - there's quite a gang of 9am and 2pm walkers at our local park. Best of luck!

Thank you, it makes such a difference just having people suggest things, makes me feel not so alone

    Thank you
  • I find making something new and yummy cheers me up so something like trying a recipe in a free supermarket magazine for cupcakes. I made my first curry from scratch at christmas from a Sainsbury's free magazine and everytime I make it I feel so proud of what I've achieved. I know that sounds lame but I used to spend £13 - £15 on Indian takeaway and now I make it for a fraction of the cost and I enjoy eating it with the extra satisfaction that I made it!!

If you like reading, there are swapping-sites you can register for meaning you can swap your old ones for new ones without having to buy them.... well, you have to post them but thats the only cost.

I am a big fan of spa-yourself-at home nights. Like someone else suggested, a hot bubble bath is great and I spend my time dwindling down my hoarded supply of toiletries - but if you dont have lots of stuff lying around at home, olive oil and salt with some essential oils make a great body scrub... there are lots of other products you can make yourself at home too.... :D

There may be a local walking/jogging group in your village (I know there is in mine) which other women or men meet in groups and go out as a crowd rather than walking/running alone. We also have local kids sports teams always looking for volunteers to help organise paperwork and red tape, also organising events and fundraising. They offer great social circles too :)

    HTH xx

Didn't want to read and run: You say you're feeling like Bridget Jones so I guess you want to lose some weight? Why not join the Slimming World thread on Health, Beauty and Fashion. You may not be able to afford/get to a club or even do it online but maybe you could buy the books cheaply from ebay and get advice from the thread. If you explain your predicament on there you'll find them very supportive. With the healthy eating plan and dog walking for exercise it would give you a project! Good Luck!

Doing it cheaply - buy a facemask - usually about £1, slather on, relax in the bubble bath with the candles. When you come out slap on the moisturiser, wash and deep condition your hair. Come out of the bath and wrap yourself up on the sofa with your dog for company and watch a film that makes you smile.

As you watch the film, do your nails - but manicure them first as the polish is more likely to come off if you apply it after you've been soaking in a nice warm bath. Alternatively - don't watch a film, Stay on here and chat!!1
Me, OH, grown DS, (other DS left home) and Mum (coming up 80!). Considering foster parenting. Hints and tips on saving £ always well received. Xx

does your village have a community building/church hall. These often have group events on to either join, or offer to help run it, join a tea rota for a club, etc. etc. Doing a job together with other people, however simple, can be a great way of making friends.

Do you have space to grow something? Even a window box or some containers on a patio? I always perk up around this time because it's seed-sowing time & I love growing veg. You can grow some fresh organic salads even with the tiniest of spaces, healthy to eat too.
