I changed from esaver 2 to 3 with no problem over the phone 0800 174 635, painless.

The only loss I can see is the plastic card does not work for esaver3, but I had no intention of using that for cash withdrawals anyway.

Good tip from ses6jwg, thank you!

If you know someone who works for Santander, or if you ask very nicely in your local branch, they will be able to "link" your e-saver 3 to your existing cash card.

you can also pay cheques and cash directly in through A&L DATMS in some branch foyers

I also changed from e saver 2 to e saver 3 via phone with no problem. They also said I could change my bank account with them Premier Direct paying 1% to a Zero Current paying 5% for one year. Only loss I can see is no european travel insurance.

Anyone who has an old A&L current account can now "upgrade" to Santander accounts.

So you've got a choice of the Reward with £10 fee and benefits, Premium at £20 and benefits, or if you meet the criteria (£10k in savings held for 3 months, investments or mortgage) and you can fund with £1k pcm and have 2 dds or so's, can upgrade to the Zero current account which gives free use abroad, 5% for 12 months and no fees for exceeding overdraft.

Just be careful, the prem direct only gave you high interest for 12 months, but the Premier came with free european travel for the lifetime of the account, if you change to Zero you cannot go back.

Depends if you use the travel really.

Note that 5% rate only applies on amounts up to £2,500. After 12 months the 5% drops to 1%.

When I phoned Santander last Sat to close Issue 2 and open issue 3 moving all the money across all went well apart from the interest earned to date on 2. They said it would be paid into 3 next month.
I was suspicious as having done this in the past several times with the old A & L the interest was paid into the new issue immediately.
Seems I was right as today they sent me cheque for the interest which means I need to pay it into my linked account and then send it to Santander.
    Bring back A & L!

Get login details for Santander online banking and you should be able to set up a bill payment to any UK bank account for electronic transfers out.

    I wish I could!

Applied 8 Feb, account opened 11 Feb, still waiting for the promised eBanking registration & 16 digit telephone ID.

My 8 digit A&L login shows the account but still won't allow me to set up any payees.

I know Santander have their work cut out integrating B&B, A&L and RBS customers into their existing infrastructure but I cannot understand why it takes anyone 2 weeks to send out a customer ID.
  • I recently opened a Santander esaver 3 online account, which was a stressful experience and very long-winded.

Once in the account, I noticed the 'help' feature did not work, despite numerous attempts spread over several days. The 'log off' account feature did not work either, again despite numerous attempts over several days. Finally, the 'send secure email' link also didn't work, yet again despite several attempts over several days.

The account has also turned out to be very limited in ways that I don't think were made clear during the application process - it doesn't accept payments either by direct debit or standing order, for example. If you want to transfer funds in you need to use BACS, which is very annoying as the daily limit is only a paltry £10,000 from my Natwest current account.

Fortunately, I had yet to transfer any money into the account and needless to say shall not now be doing so, as my experience so far is that this organisation's online banking is a joke. I have also failed to get any information on how to close the account and, should I have decided to move money into it, what the daily withdrawal limit amount was, if any.
