Selling our house and moving into my parents - will it affect our income?

If you have a property that you own, you need to tqake careful advice, as this would affect your access to benefits. How would you pay the mortgage? If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0

We already are in a mortgaged property - bought it 8 years ago when my husband was fine and working, when he got ill we had to fight for his incapacity but we still had to pay our mortgage - this is where my lovely parents stepped in and helped us out BIG time financially so we actually had some food to eat
we get all the above benefits whilst in our mortgaged home - we are thinking of selling it and moving in with my parents
I find it all very confusing lol

if you sell your current home and end up with more than £6000 in capital it would reduce any means tested benefits e.g housing benefit if you rented.
when our 2 were 7 and 11 we lived with the in laws for a year(long story)but as well as we got on before and after,it was a nightmare, luckily we had only rented out our own home0 -
I think that if the OP sells up she'll be considered as making herself voluntarily homeless which could affect the council house option.0

MandyG, just as a matter of interest (and because I'm a nosy person!) how big is your parents' house and what sort of accommodation would you have there if you were to move in?0

exactly - we tried to sell up and move to edinburgh in 2006 - had a buyer for our house then we went to the council to have them say theywould not house us because we were making ourselves interntionally homeless
and my mum and dad have a 4 bedroom, 3 storey brand new house. Massive livingroom which my dad wants to split into 2 so we each have our own space lol
been on the local council benefit calculator thing and it says we should get housing benefit.
We have lots to think about , but I really really appreciate everyone's help
thanking you all loads

You wont get housing benefit living at your parents.
D70How about no longer being masochistic?
How about remembering your divinity?
How about unabashedly bawling your eyes out?
How about not equating death with stopping?0 -
You won't get housing benefit living with family.0

whoops - sorry I meant we might get housing benefit if we rented from a landlord, not if we stayed with my parents:jDebt free from 2010:j(except for mortgage lol)0

Any chance of renting your house for 6 months to see how it goes with parents?
Personally I wouldn't do it as you are all home all day and have very little chance of having your own space and time away from parents - what about meal times, kitchen time, food shopping etc?Mama read so much about the dangers of drinking alcohol and eating chocolate that she immediately gave up reading.0
