Selling our house and moving into my parents - will it affect our income?

Hi all

we have come to a dead end - we live in a 2 bedroom house with 6 of us (this doesn't bother us too much cause we all squeeze in just now as kids are only 7, 5, 3 and 1) we hate where we live and have had so many problems with local NHS (our kids all have medical problems and we have been fighting NHS for years now - they dont like us cause we went for second opinions at Great Ormond Street - long story), we cant trust them now so we need to move

We did think it would be best to stay as it is our own home and it would be ours when paid off, even thought we could save every penny of my husbands DLA so we could get an extension and another bedroom with bathroom added on, but it would take years to do that and our kids would be teenagers before it started

problem is, we are on benefits, cause my husband has narcolepsy and cataplexy and cannot work - I am self employed but dont earn much at all as I am a lot of responsibilites at home. We would not be able to get another mortgage, plus we dont know if we would get housing benefit (not sure if that goes on the same calculations as council tax one as we get full council tax benefit)

So my parents have offered to have us move in with them - it is in a different county so would be starting afresh with a whole new medical team - plus it's closer to more things for me to do with the kids as we have to home school them due to being let down by our local school - also closer to more home schooling activites and home schooling groups.

I am not 100% sure on how benefits work but was slightly concerned about moving in with my parents and then losing some of them. I am not sure if some benefits go on entire household income. My dad is an architect so he earns a decent wage - we will be paying rent/dig money to my parents, but we will be paying for all our own things, my parents wont be providing anything other than a roof over our heads if that makes sense

does anyone know if we would lose any of them? or if some go on entire household income

we get

Child tax
working tax
child benefit
incapacity benefit for my husband

DLA for my husband
DLA for our 5 yr old
Carer's allowance

thanks for any advice

Put your details into the above calculator. If you are moving will you be giving up work, if so the WTC part of your claim would be abolished but the rest I don't think are affected however if I'm wrong I'm sure someone will come along to correct me :)

Hi Aarons Mummy for your reply

I would continue my work as I work from home - I only do small bits trying to sell my own personalised chocolates and hand made cards, but I never made much if anything cause I have so much other stuff to do with looking after everyone else and home schooling. But I do my best as I dont want to sit here and not try and make money.

will have a look at that link thank you very much

I have now tried various calculator thingys and it all just says the same - tells us what we are entitled to and we already get all that

I cannot find anything that would ask about entire household income? it technically would be like living back at home again, but my parents will not be supporting us financially

I am starting to think we might just have to stick it out where we are in ou mortgaged house - really not liking the idea of selling up and having to worry if we would lose our benefits then be left unable to get a house of our own

  • As far as I am aware, your parent's income will not be bought into it as although you will be living in the same house, it is not as a 'couple' with them.
My friend lives accross the road with her Dad, he works, she is a single Mum and she gets income support.

Not financial but possibly worth bearing in mind. Where would you live if staying with your parents doesn't work out? As you say, you won't get another mortgage.

I have to say that your parents must be either saints or lunatics to suggest this but good luck if you decide to do it.

lol - They are both. Absolutely lovely to suggest it and to give up their lovely QUIET home to let us 6 move in, but they are crazy and the more we think about it the more we think it might not work

It is great to have parents that are willing to help, but they are already 'taking over' so to speak. We were going to pay them dig/rent money, but we will be giving up so much freedom. It will be on their terms, we wont be able to fully relax, plus my dad works from home so we will have to try and keep the kids sort of quiet lol (although my dad is planning on moving his office into the garage so wont be too much noise)

Back to your question - what happens if it doesn't work out? well we are left unable to get a mortgage and might not be able to pass the credit checks for private renting, so screwed basically - this is what we dont like - is it worth risking our home to be closer to better hospitals and a better way of life or do we slug it out and just stay here and hopefully fully pay off our mortgage and have our own home, and save hard for attic conversion to give us space and just travel back and forth to our parents every week?

with 4 little kids, my husband and I are struggling to see if it is worth taking this HUGE risk.

I sympathise and wouldn't do it myself.

Good luck with making the decision and with the result.
  • Only you can take the risk but if you have any equity in your property after you sell would you be able to private rent?

Some places will take 6months up front as a guarantee or would your dad be a guarantour for you if it wasn't to work out? I think yuo may be entitled to local housing allowance and council tax benefit to help pay for the rent depending on your income but I assume this is less than £100 per week as you are claiming carers allowance.

    Maybe something to think about?

When my daughter was small I tried to move back home with my mum and dad. I love them with all my heart but it was an absolute nightmare. It felt like I was a child again! I lasted two weeks.

Why not try it first and see how it would all work out before you give up your home. I'm sure that your parents love you and your children very much but it would be a big change for them to go from a quiet house to one full of kids!

    thanks again

we would have about £8000 equity if we sold the house, but we would have noone to be a gaurantor - my dad has a good wage but they too have had to enter a trust deed/IVA thing so they wouldn't pass any credit score either

yes my income is less than £100 - near enough nil actually, but I don't like the thought of selling up to then apply for housing benefit, to be told we aren't entitled.

Do private rented places mind if you pay the first few months then have to go onto housing benefit? I see alot of adverts that say no dss

We also are not keen on giving up our mortgaged home - as we would never get another mortgage again. That's a pride thing though I think
