5 cm dilated - is she in labour?

My daughter's 39 weeks pregnant, first baby. Her partner rang two hours ago to say they'd gone to hospital as she was having pains 5 minutes apart.

She was examined and found to be 5cm dilated so was told she was definitely staying in hospital tonight. He's promised to keep me fully informed.

It's a long time since mine were born and I can't remember specifics. Does being 5cm dilated indicate she's definitely in full labour? Or could it still be a false alarm and she could be sent home?

I don't want to go to bed as I won't sleep a wink.

Yes she's in labour, you get to 10cm then you push! She'll be there till she has the baby.

She did well to get to 5cm before going into hospital.

    Congrats btw :j

No they won't send her home at 5cm and labour is well established, hopefully it won't take long for her to fully dilate. Looks like you'll have a grandchild by the morning. xx :A

Ohhhh! How on earth am I going to get through the night? I wanted to zoom out to the hospital but my daughter had said I wouldn't be allowed in...certainly not in the middle of the night!

I asked her partner, who's a lovely guy, if he wanted me to come in but he said the same.

I've drank about a million cups of tea and three Cadbury's Creme Eggs and my nerves are totally shattered. I'm praying everything will be ok. Ohhhhhhh!
  • I was 5cm dilated when I got to hospital with DS and I was DEFINITELY in full labour! Hope you manage to get some sleep and that you get your good news v soon.

I'm sure if there is any news, they will be on the phone quicker than you can say 'Nanna!' :D

Aww, such an exciting time, I watched 'One born every minute' earlier and was in tears watching the Mum's give birth.

All the best to you and your family x

With DD I was 4 cms dilated and I was SURE I was having her but no. They sent me home and I went back the next day and she still never came os they sent me home again. I was walking around 4-5 cms's dilated for 3 weeks. 3 WEEKS. I was crying forthem to get the baby out but they refused to induce me saying she was fine. But when she came, she came. 25 minutes and it was ALL over with. Even the midwife had to drop everything because she came out do fast. LOL. Happy memories!!

Good luck to the OP and congrats on your new grandchild in the morning. Do let us know. :)
