M&S clueless when it comes to bra fittings?

  • Im a bra fitter in debenhams, and i must say, we get this alot, i work in a shopping centre that also has a m&s and we get many customers who come straight to us from m&s as they dont feel that they have been fitted correctly, and we also find that they fit too large on the band, they tend to go larger on the band and smaller in the cup for the 'alternate' size that they will stock, eg making a 30" into a 32" so they stock that size, however this is wrong, to find an alternate size you need to go down in the band and up in the cup. Fitting someone to a larger band is pointless, they may as well not wear a bra and it is not supporting them correctly!!!

M&S do seem to go high on the band size, low on the cup size compared to other stores.

I was measured in a boutique underwear shop, Debenhams and several other underwear shops and all suggested I was as 32D/30DD.

M&S didn't measure, they asked what I was currently wearing and said I was 36B.

I found it strange that they didn't actually measure me.

I think M&S bras are sized differently from other brands as 32D is fine for me in other brands/shops, but in M&S the 36B actually wasn't a bad fit.

    Very confusing!!
  • Im good at undoing bras should any of you need a hand ;)

I gave up on both M&S and Debenhams fittings at just turned 14. I was told in M&S that I couldn't get anything suitable there as teenagers don't have breasts that large(nice) and Debenhams tried to put me in something my gran might find old fashioned:cool:. I was in tears and my mother was tearing her hair out, when in desperation we went into a little boutique. The lovely lady there not only found me a couple of lovely, pretty but practical bras - in the needed 28E - but also taught me how to fit them myself. I wish I knew where she was now as I would love to thank her for that lesson! I have never had a bra fitted since!

BTW, i wouldn't worry about a fitter not actually measuring you, my supposed measurements are nowhere near my right bra size!

Ive never been properly fitted, but it is interesting to note how the so called measurements work out....
Different sites give me different measurements - one says Im a 30AA another says I should be a 36A and then another says a 36D - and yet I wear a 34C perfectly comfortably....

  • the lady who runs this site is an MSE'r and when i discussed with her sizing she came back and the one she said is spot on at m&s, perfect round the back and no gaping :)

To be fair, every woman is different in size, height, frame etc. It would be nigh on impossible to get an accurate fitting without having to try on various brands, sizes etc.

I have bought many bras from M&S. I have never had any problem and the measure and the actual are sometimes very different but with a bit of patience and someone running back and forth getting various sizes and styles you get there in the end.

I dont think we can make a sweeping statement that X store is rubbish at fitting because it comes down to the individual shop assistant you get. I never had a very good service in a local Debenhams but a brilliant service in another branch, the same could well be said for M&S.

I quite like the fact we are all a little different in size and shape!

M&S measured me a few years ago. They said I was a 46A. I looked at "the boys" and said ... nah, I don't think so. I'd only got measured because I'd recently gained weight and (thought I) needed to go up a back size (which I did - and a cup too). I left M&S with some 42DDs...which fitted perfectly.

My aunt was trained as a corsetier (back in the dim and distant mists of the 1950s) and so she gave me a few tips, when I complained to her about M&S being useless.

I now don't need anyone to measure me, and since I've lost some weight, I'm now wearing a 38F (my boobs are mostly "breast tissue" rather than "fat"). I'm on the "tightest" fitting around now and when I next purchase bras I'll try them on and see whether a 36 will fit.
We may not have it all together, but together we have it all

What a horrible thing for an adult to say to a 14 year old girl!

I went to M&S looking for a basque to wear under my wedding dress. It was a sweetheart neckline with thin shoulder straps, so I was worried about bra straps showing.

When we went into the fitting room, the M&S lady told me I was "far too large for a basque." I'm a size 14! She measured me and said she'd go and find something.

She came back with a push up balconette bra. I put it on and it thrust my boobs skyward, so they were precariously balancing and wobbling in the air. I didn't feel comfortable at all in it, but she was saying how perfect it looked?!

When she left, I leaned forward and fell right out of the bra. That would have been fantastic on my wedding day :o

Went to a local shop instead who insisted I brought my dress into the store. They fitted me with a lovely basque, then put my dress on to make sure it all looked ok. All the shop ladies and another customer were ushered in to admire me in my dress and I felt really special
Here I go again on my own....
