EMA problems.

I have twin daughters at the local college, both having problems.
One hurt her leg quite badly during her martial arts class and was unable to walk for a week. She `phoned the college to tell them. They turned down her ema for that week and told her that she had one week in which to appeal. The letter was dated after the last day to appeal.
I think the second case is worse. Other girl is doing an early years education course. She has to do a placement at the local infants school. The college have refused to allow her the ema for the whole week every time she spends one day on this compulsary placement. Surely this can`t be correct?. Any advice gratefully received.

  • Try ringing the ema department explain the situation and see what they say. Good luck

I `phoned them earlier but, as I am the estranged father, they won`t talk to me as my name is not on the application forms. I`ve asked their mother to give them a call. The EMA helpline person did say that it was wrong that the daughter on placement (work experience effectively) didn`t get paid.

my daaghter is at college doing a childcare couse which involves two compulsory days per week on placement, she gets her ema no problem. The placement is counted towards the hours for the course and as such is part of the course. I would take this further, that's rubbish what the college are telling you.
  • It's rubbish that the government bribe children into staying on at school by handing out free money to them.

It's all up to the schools terms and condititons they apply to it but if you are ill you should still recieve it providing it is authorised.

If your daughter was off for the whole week then EMA will not be paid, you can appeal it but they will not overturn this decision.
It is a new rule which they have put in place for this academic year. Sorry.

This is wrong. They should be paying it. The college or the infants school should provide a letter to the EMA office within the college stating that is where she is and it has been authorised.

That is correct. Their mother should sort this out if she is the primary care giving adult (their wording, basically if they live with her).

They shouldn't have to do this, her placement has been timetabled as part of her course and they will/should have placed her there. They just need to mark her as present at college.

Both girls have now started to get EMA again. I think that some is missing and will check their bank statements when they arrive. Thanks for all replies.

The ema is paid to help with travel costs and any books needed.

My sons both got ema but would have stayed on at school for A levels anyway.

One is in his second year of A levels and my other son is in his second year at university and he also has a part-time job.

Well I don't see any reason why the government should be handing out free books and travel. I recently left school after finishing my A-Levels. I had to get a job and work whilst I was at it. I didn't recieve any EMA and paid for all my travel and books and now I am paying for university education. EMA is another one of those labour policies to allow people who can't be bothered to work for a living to do so.
