Splitting the bill...

Most times I have been in company that does the pay what you think you owe method. And the majority of times alcohol bills are paid individually or at the bar.
However one time the bill was going round the table for people to put they owed in - I was next to last to put in. Stumped up my shared a a fairly generous tip (I used to be a waitress;) ) As I was putiing my purse away I heard the 'lady' next me say to her friend 'There's too much here - I won't bother putting my little bit in.'
I was not brave enough to confront her but if she had a closer friend I would have told her what I thought of her actions:mad:0 -
I took a group of friends (10) for a set meal just before Xmas.
I said I'd pay for set meal of £27.50 each, but not drinks. Imagine my surprise when no-one ordered any!!!!!
So I asked for 2 jugs of tap water and 2 of orange juice. I ended up paying that as well, didn't mind thought it would be a couple of quid.
Well it wasn't. They charged me £38.50. I couldn't believe it, especially when about 4 of them complained that there wasn't any booze and the food was horrible.................... really some people!!

Wow, some people. Drop them of your Xmas card list & don't dare take any of them out again, they should have bought their own drinks & YOURS.0 -
Hiya
Im always broke and so are most of my friends apart from a few so we always each pay for what we had, apart from when its someones birthday or something then we divide the cost of theirs between us. We have always done it this way and i could not afford to change it.£2 Savers club £0/£150

we are trying to get people to do this:
everyone to put in what they think their bill is then add the pot up and split the difference plus tips. So far so good0 -
I'm glad I found this thread and hope no one minds me resurrecting it. :j
So what happens when 2 Mum's go out for the day, one has 2 kids (a teenager and a younger child) and the other has 1 child (a younger child - same age as first younger child).
What happens when you order a "family" meal and the parent with 2 kids puts in half and obviously expects the other parent to find the other half? :rolleyes:0 -
I'm not a big drinker, and quite often will just have a soft drink with my meal. A lot of the time I get stung, and end up paying more to subsidise those who have been drinking.
If I have a meal with a group of people and we're all having a glass of wine except one person, when the meal comes, I will make a point of reminding the others that there was someone who didn't have any alcohol, and as such, owes less.
This is in the vain hope that karma will pay me back and next time I'm the only non-drinker, someone will stick up for me. I'm far too British to stick up for myself though.
When I'm out in a big group, I know it's pretty much a given we'll be splitting the bill by however many people there are, so try to order food/drink in the same price bracket as the majority of people there.
As someone else said earlier, when splitting the bill, you win some, and you lose some. But if you're consistently losing, I would question whether you want to continue to dine out with those people.
In Jet's case... If this happens a lot, I would pop in what you think you owe, count up the money, put a confused expression on your face and say, "Oh dear, I don't think this is right", make a show of examining the bill, and then say, "I was so sure I added up my share properly. Are you sure you've put in enough? There doesn't seem to be enough here." If you are a mum to a young child, I'm sure you don't really want to keep getting ripped off as the money could go to better uses!!0 -
Assuming we have all had similar priced things, I'm happy to split it - but if somebody orders something quite expensive, then I cannot see the big problem in asking for their share. I don't really care what they think - they ordered it, they can pay for it. I don't know why it has to turn into some socially complicated situation.'We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time. '

I'm lucky in the fact that when we go on a works do then the boss pays for it all (inc drinks) as he puts it through the company as expenses.
When me and OH go for a meal with family we all want the best deal for ourselves so tend to stick to the places that have the deals such as '2 for the price of one' - we then all see who is having what and then go and order seperatly with those who's meals are similar in price ordering together. If we was to order the meals as 1 table you tend not to get the best deal as its always the cheapest meal that is free.
Unfortunately this deal only works well if there are even numbers!
If no-one is driving we drink in rounds as we all drink the same amount but if someone is driving we get our own.
