Anyone built a wet room?

  • We've just had a semi-wetroom (on the first floor) built I planned it all myself, bought all the necessary materials. I didn't actually install it as we are having an extension done so I let the builders bathroom fitter do it. Basically we didn't want a big step up into the room, so I looked long and hard, got some recommendations etc. We originally considered a Wedi System, but the base for the shower was 40mm thick, plus the tile and adhesive. I found Impey Aqua-dec online done some research and opted for it. It is 22mm thick, so I decided to have to the floor boards taken up, replaced with 22mm moisture resistant chipboard. Then everything is on the same level. I purchased a large shower screen from our local glass supplier, this is fitted in a track which is screwed down next to the aqua-dec. The tiling then does not look like its sloping to the drain because it is semi-hidden behind the screen.
I think that it is something that I could have done myself and probably would have done if the builder wasn't already on site. I am a fairly experienced DIYer, I wouldn't recommend a novice attempting it.
As for watertightness, the builder was quite happy to fit it and had fitted one before with no issues. As long as you use the Impey tilesafe to form a seal at the base then I don't forsee any problems.

PM me if you have any other questions, I'll happily discuss it
  • We run a business supplying and installing wet rooms, some of the prices quoted in response to this thread appear excessive (up to £12k). We use the Aqua/Level Dec as our preferred choice, they are designed for use in concrete floors, floating floors or floorboards and therefore ideal for use on any floor level. The secret to the wet room is to ensure that the remainder of the floor area is level and that the only fall is within the tray itself.
The wet rooms that we create are generally for the less able market and therefore the spec is usually for safe tread flooring as opposed to tiling - but it is imperative that the tile membrane is used if tiling ( and as someone else suggested, use a mosaic tile - if you use large tiles you will actually lose the fall on the tray area.)
As for cost - well it can vary - preparing the floor, materials (tray, flooring etc) & labour, repositioning pipework etc - approx £2.5K - £3k. Our average wet room is approx £5 to £6K but that is based on new basin, ped, w/c etc, tiling, preparing walls etc, new shower, screen (if reqd). Bathroom products obviously vary in price - best thing is to set a budget, then choose additional products accordingley. Hope this helps, if you need futher advice just ask
  • We had a wet room built 3 months ago and cost £4500 including labour to fit items (flooring, shower, tiles, electrician, plumber etc), shower, disabled seat, aqua flooring, tray, curtain/pole. We supplied tiles that we liked and this took 1 week from start to finish. We have a seperate toilet so no toilet in the bathroom.

It looks pretty good, think I have some pics somewhere. We live in London.

 Slightly confused here. If it is a wet room, what is the tray for?

  • Sorry, I think its called a tray....its what they put under the aqua flooring to get some slant on the floor....so the water drains away.

We had a shower-room / toilet built as part of an extension going on 20 years ago now. Fully tiled with non-slip quarry tiles on the floor. Not designed as a wet-room but essentially became one as there is no shower tray just a shower head on the wall. The floor slopes to the drain in the shower area of what is a small room.

We had a problem with water seeping into the garage which it adjoins but resealing the wall-floor join with waterproof tile cement and then a waterproof beading sorted that.

One of our best moves ever I think. :) Cost? Around 2K 18 years ago?
    Where now?
  • my name is bill, and i install wet floor shower systems for a living. if i was doing this paticular job, i would charge no more than £4,000 for it. anything over that is really excessive in my opinion.
  • It depends on what size the room is. Is it going to be fully tiled floor to ceiling, whta quality are the items to be fitted suite, taps, shower etc!!
