Anyone built a wet room?

Hi,
Just wondering if anyone has built a wet room? I know there is a product called aqua-dec which according to the website is a doddle to install (they would say that though). However a bathroom installer we had round to give us a quote had never heard of it and didn't know how to build a wet room.
Can it be so easy yet the professionals don't know how to do it?

This site will give you instrustions and a little more information on Aqua Dec systems.

I've built a few of these over the years, they are labour intensive and as a result far from cheap, none of the rooms I undertook cost less than £10,000 (that's supply and fit). Done properly they are outstanding and will increase the desirablility of your property, whether you'll get all your money back in increased value is hard to judge.

With a little common sense a good installer should be able to fit this system, but I would be inclined to find someone that knows what they are doing.

One tip, find a nice stone mosaic tile for the dec area itself, looks better, the nature of mosaics gives you the non slip surface and it's a whole lot easier to fit.

Not everyone does. He might just do straight bathroom swaps  . I've never done a wetroom but I do know there is a lot of work involved. How much were you budgeting for this?

Someone who could do a wetroom told us £12000, That was too much so we asked someone else, he said it would be about £8000 but didn't do plans for a wetroom just a shower tray. we told him we wanted a wet room and he said how do you form a slope for the water on a flat floor? Aqua-Dec we said but he just looked blank at his point, hence me considering the DIY option.
I have fitted showers and a bathroom before and I am thinking that my budget will go a long way if i do it myself so no scrimping on those extras that make all the difference.
That video does make it look very easy and I am tempted.

The base construction , running the waste, getting the falls in the correct places, re routing any existing underfloor services and the cost of the dec and membrane itself will account for a lot of the money.

If you are competant, go for it, if you aren't sure don't. A badly fitted wetroom will cost as much to fix as it did to install, a badly fitted shower tray is easy to sort out, well comparitively.
  • we've just built a ground floor shower room & I umd & ahd for ages about having it as a wet room, after having talked to plumber, central heating/plumbing merchants & bulder I decided against it as 1) even though guaranteed if there was a problem with the aqua dec all the tiling would have to be ripped up to get at the membrane etc & 2) the shower was too close to the doorway for spraying purposes - I compromised & found a white resin stone cast tray 900m sq that was slimline & only rises about an inch off the floor & a frameless screen - as my main objective was as streamline a finish as possible within my budget & I just didn't like the 6" deep white plastic shower trays - I believe I found a good compromise & it looks the bus
  • We looked into wet rooms when we redid our house. We decided against them, and they are especially a bad idea upstairs as if the floor is not completely solid it is very likely to leak. I don't think they are worth the hassle/risk/expense. You can get walk-in cubicles/enclosures that look very stylish and have the feel of a wet room if you buy a double length one.

You need to tell me whether this is upstairs or downstairs and what the walls andfloors are made of. I work in the industry. also how is your property constructed, stud walls block etc. I fell many of the manufacturers systems they promote are do not go far enough. The bottom line is if it goes wrong you have to rip the whole room apart. They are involved and there are no shortcuts but done right they are fantastic. Let me know in detail what you have and i will recommend
