Thank you - I've done that now. It didn't come up on my search as I had the '.d' left on the end. Strangely, it can't find the virus when it conducts the scan on the only two areas that can be ticked - Services and drivers, and Boot sectors.

Do I need to install it somewhere else instead, please?

Thanks for all the help this weekend, I really appreciate the time and effort you've all taken.

The computer is looking much better, though still no internet connection working, so if anyone can help with that I'd be grateful. I'm away with work from early in the morning for three days, so won't be able to make any progress or get back to you, but will do as soon as I'm home again.

if you've still got a rootkit on there, it REALLY needs zapping. Go into safe mode with networking, disable avg and see if combofix will run now.

combofix will usually get TDSS, but having avg installed on your system is a bit of a blow as CF won't always run on an avg system that's not fully turned off.

personally, I'd be inclined to uninstall avg completely (in safe mode with networking), then run combofix, then download and install avira or avast.

You seem to be having a tough time with this one. I would go with what GunJack says, and persevere with Combofix.
After that, we can try to get your internet connection running, so backtrack on these once it's clear.

I'm back, and have my own laptop (which hasn't magically fixed itself) and OH's laptop (which is still working and connecting to the internet fine).

I've checked the above - IP and DNS both set to auto. Now re-starting in safe mode with networking, and am uninstalling AVG.

Is the next thing to combofix, please?

I'm a bit confused that Kapersky (which I've re-run) now can't find the TDSS (or any other problem) files. Is that because I had to choose 'skip' when it first found them? Or hav ethey hidden themselves?

I'm re-running Malware, having downloaded the updates to a memory stick on this laptop - nothing found.

Woohoo! I'm on my own laptop online! Combofix seems to have fixed stuff, and I still have my documents and other stuff intact so far, so all seems well.

I know I shoudl do the list of things to make my computer quicker and get rid of rubbish, is there anything else I should be doing to check that everything's OK now?
