There is definitely something iffy there:

This looks like a virus type of thing, but I doubt Hijackthis will remove it, as something else is triggering it, and once it's in memory it will block removal attempts

Update: I went for everything - one new trojan (trojan-downloader.java.openconnection.cg.) found and deleted so far...

Update 2: An hour in and only 14% scanned so far, so I fear it's going to be another late one.

Ooo - virus MEM:Rootkit.Win32.TDSS.d - can't be disinfected or deleted as disinfection failed. What should I do? Skip i.e. not perform any action?

I skipped, but a quick google shows this is a tough one. It's now found it again, in the system memory (I think), and has gone into 'Disinfect Active Threats' scan mode, but now back to 'disinfection failed'.

Anyone had success with this one? Is this likely to be the big problem?

Progress: kapersky restarted my machine, it didn't have the 'Generic Host for Win32' mini issue I first came here with, the task bar at the bottom of the screen is now blue, the icons for Wirless and Local Area connection are now in the tray by the clock and the 'Network Connections' window now works! Will track back through the thread to see what I was supposed to do with it.

Still no internet connection, but it's looking more normal which I'm hoping is an encouraging sign.

Kapersky Virus removal still going, and still no way to sort the MEM:Rootkit.Win32.TDSS.d issue yet.
