We almost always have cabbage with pork/ham/gammon/bacon. I cook it either in the meat juices/water or in some chicken stock. At this time of year brussels sprouts are tasty with gammon too.
Also, carrots with butter and honey - just cook them in a very little water, add a knob of butter and a dessert spoon of honey. Cook until tender but take care that they don't burn, add more water if they need it.

I used to make parsnip 'chips' in the oven and i've never had a kid cottton on that it was a different vegetable.
But I don't agree with you that all kids dislike vegetables. Kids that haven't been given vegetables from the very start as just a normal part of their food don't like them. Kids that have, do. I know loads of kids who love veggies - because that's what their families eat. If the parents don't eat much in the way of veggies, or give the kids different food to the adults, then yes, kids get weird about it.
Anyway, sometimes it's the cooking method that kids don't like. My son wasn't big on cooked veg when he was small but loved eating raw carrot sticks, raw baby sweetcorn, raw pepper pieces, raw cabbage (even I don't like it cooked), raw mange tout, etc with something to dip them into. He liked his veggies to crunch rather than squish :-)[STRIKE][/STRIKE]I am a long term poster using an alter ego for debts and anything where I might mention relationship problems or ex. I've been given a gammon joint.
I'm going to cook my gammon in the slow cooker this weekend with an inch or two of coke. But then what do I do/serve it with?
There's going to leftover too, I was thinking of making soup and a pie - any other ideas?Currently studying for a Diploma - wish me luck

I have the same thing in my slow cooker today. I usually put mashed potatoe and vegetables with it. Its for the kids so I tend to keep my cooking simple as they are more inclined to eat it then.
leftovers i use for sandwiches for myself and kids pack lunch next day.GC Jan £431.490/£480.00  £48.51 under budget!0 -
ooh sounds interesting, never cooked mine in coke, normally apple juice in my slowcooker. I have served mine warm with an apricot sauce, or we just love it cold with mash, and pickled onions and chutney!!!! I have a large piece of gammon in the freezer that I got reduced I might try the coke, although just remembered I have cooked pork chops in coke a recipe I picked up whilst on holiday in the US.Fibro-Warrior0

If anything I enjoy the soup just as much as the gammon itself.:)
The stock is fantastic for making a lentil and vegetable soup and I just add any trimmings of gammon that fall off when slicing. To get stock though you wouldn't be able to cook with coke. I just use a traditional method and add an onion, couple of carrots, bay leaf and a few (5?) peppercorns.
It always slices better from cold.
I tend to serve with cauliflower/broccoli cheese and new potatoes or wedges or some other veg (broccoli/green beans) and dauphinoise potatoes. The cheesy sauces mean I don't have to make parsley or other sauce for the gammon.
I slice and freeze any leftovers for another meal and scraps go in the soup!0 -
You could serve it with chips and egg? Although I usually go for mash and veg, maybe honeyed carrots or cabbage. Cabbage is lovely when cooked in the gammon stock, although not sure what the coke would be like with it!
For leftovers we usually have bubble and squeak or macaroni cheese with the leftover shredded gammon through it.
