Osborne looking for ideas

http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2011/feb/04/chancellor-crowdsources-budget-ideas-george-osborne
George Osborne has this morning opened an "online portal", where voters can submit their proposals for next month's budget.
"Next month's budget will be all about growth," Osborne said today. "In particular I want to know what businesses, large and small, want from me."

Is this for real?

I think its a great idea.

Much better than Labour's perched in an ivory tower, authoritarian know it all approach.

If you want business to expand to take on more labour it seems sensible to ask them what rule changes would encourage them to do that.

It sounds sensible... if they listen to the ideas. Tell me, they got 100,000 ideas from public servants using a similar web site... how many did they actually use?

If they use the ideas (and they are sensible)... great... if it is just a publicity stunt (like I think the public servant website was) then it is a waste of money.

I dunno, did he read my posts on the other thread? Seems my suggestion has been actioned :D

I really can't fault the leaders of our country asking us for our opinions and giving us an easy cost effective way of doing so. Whether they act on them....well, that's another issue.

2 ways of looking at this.

either it's a jesture/PR stunt as it was last year when they set up the civil servants portal to suggest ideas.

    OR

Osbourne is so lacking in ability that he has no clue and is looking for us to do his job for him.

As your average Politician is so out of touch with the real world, I doubt they will have the intelligence to understand any of the ideas put forward anyway.

The last time a politician asked the public for their ideas, the told him to scrap the congestion charge. Strangely it was ignored.

  • Well I've got all my "suggestions for Growth" in.

    1. Introduce 'Holiday Tax Credit' of £800 per household member for those on benefits, so they can have an annual holiday.
    2. Free unlimited bus/train/air Passes for all those on benefits so they can 'look for work'.
    3. Grandmaternity Leave of 6 weeks per grandmother (grandfather) for babysitting.
    4. Car 'Scrappage' scheme extension. £10,000 allowance for cars traded in. Cars will not be scrapped but given to students to help them travel from lodgings to lectures.
    5. Free Stakeholder Pension contributions (£3,600) per annum for the unemployed.
    6. Health & Safety extensions - free 'hard hats and goggles' supplied by councils for weddings and civil partnerships (to protect against confetti)
    7. Jobstart guarantee - make it illegal to sack new workers within first 3 years of employment, to encourage longevity of employment for jobseekers.
    8. Shareholder Schemes - All small business (<20 employees) to distibute 45% of company shares to employees to encourage loyalty.

This will get us back on our feet.

I signed my submission 'Gordon Brown'.
