Samsung Galaxy S internet problem

Hi, I hope one of you clever people will be able to help me.

On Tuesday I got a new Samsung Galaxy S on Vodafone. I've not been able to connect to the internet unless I do it via WiFi. I've spoken to several people at Vodafone but nobody seems to be able to help. The root of the problem seems to be that I don't have a 3G symbol appearing on the phone but Vodafone don't seem to know what to do to fix it, other than sending me a new SIM or getting me to send the phone back or me traipsing to the Trafford Centre (aka the ninth circle of hell) on a Saturday afternoon to go to the Vodafone shop.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Is there a way to switch 3G on in the settings or anything?

The signal isn't great, but I am getting one or two bars. Is that likely to be the problem?

Could be an issue with their network. I would call them back tomorrow and see what they say about it, sounds like it could be.

    Try this:

Go to Settings > Wireless and Network > Scroll down to mobile network then tap the box and it should turn on. If not ask Voda to send the settings for vpn to your phone.

They reckon it's either a faulty SIM or a faulty phone, they're not really interested in hearing any other suggestions. I guess I'll have to go to the Vodafone shop tomorrow and I'll ask them about your suggestion. Thanks.

I edited my post. Take another look.
  • Sorry, I'm probably being really thick, when you say "tap the box", which box do you mean?

Where it says Mobile Network tap on that and the white box should then have a tick in it.

So, Settings > Wireless and Networks > scroll down to mobile network and in small writing underneath it will say 'connect to the internet'

Tap there and it should come on.
  • Under "Mobile networks" in small text it says "set options for roaming, networks, APNs". The guy from vodafone talked me through how to input the settings in the Access Point Names section, but it still doesn't work. No internet connection, no 3G symbol. Should I have a 3G symbol on the phone? The vodafone folk don't seem to be able to decide on that.
  • You want the setting just above mobile networks - Mobile Network.
  • There isn't one for "mobile network", just the mobile networks one. Above that is VPN settings.
