I was where the Street View car was but more nearer to the give way island. Taxi was coming out of the side road on the right of the picture.
Nice! Have they started to employ visually challenged road planners in Northumberland? Common sense says that it's risky to place the traffic measure so close to a junction.
The oncoming traffic has priority over you, but if you are already committed on the manoeuvre then the taxi should have given way to you.The man without a signature.0 -

If the road has numerous junctions/driveways/accesses then there is little option but to place a chicane at or near a junction.
As far as I know it's standard practice to use junctions anyway.
As far as the OP is concerned - I was definitely swaying towards the OP having prioirity.....but....having seen the street view image with a large "give way to oncoming vehicles" then the timing is critical as to who gives way to who.
It's definitelty a tricky one.

Hi,i can see why you'd find this confusing, but theoretically the blue car is emerging from one road to another at a give way (or was it a stop line) and therefore should take effective observations in both directions before emerging, rather like he would or should if you where passing a line of paked cars and you where on the wrong side of the road, although i can see his argument if he had already joined the new road and you failed to give way.I would suggest that the next time you come along that road you anticipate the same happening again and prepare to respond in good time,or react quickly.Treat it like an unmarked crossroads, cos who has priority at an unmarked crossraods??0

My opinion as well. The diagram shows a double dotted line in front of the blue car clearly showing that car is joining the road so should give priority to cars already on it.johnfarquhar74 wrote: »Only my opinion but the car that is passing the island(?) has right of way as they are already on the road. The car turning left from the side street has to make sure the road is clear for them to join, that means look right to giveway to traffic coming towards them but also left to make sure there is nothing coming towards them on the 'wrong' side of the road(could be an emergency vehicle overtaking a queue of traffic!).0 -
There is no such thing as Right of Way as much as there is no fast lane on a motorway.
If you are appraoching a give way to turn onto a main road then you are required to "Give way" to all traffic on the main road, regardless of the direction it is coming from, and also regardless of what side of the road it is on. Parked cars or obstructions which could force traffic onto the wrong side of the road need to be taken into account by the person waiting to turn onto the main road.
Although you are advised to be careful when passing parked vehicles that are close to side roads, it is still your priority when you are on the main road.Don't try to teach a pig to sing - it wastes your time and annoys the pig0 -
Im in agreement with the above replies, the vehicle entering the "main" road should give way to all traffic on said road.... Regardless of direction of travel.
Poor road design there by the way, clearly designed by a total moron!“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Well the only person with any type of Give Way marking is the OP. The side road the Taxi came out of has no indication that driver's should give way, or that they are joining a 'main' road. There are no road markings, give way or Stop signs evident.0

The answer is that the island in the road should never have been installed so close to a junction.0

Me at the give way to on-coming traffic point, or the car exiting the side road behind the give way point? (blue car)
Here is a (rather crappy) little diagram of what I mean. I'm the red car and the grey bit is the give-way to on-coming traffic point.
The reason why I'm checking is that I've just nearly been run off the road by a Taxi.
Oh and the Taxi was not indicating so No idea which way he intended to turn.
Without reading any comments;
If the taxi driver was going straight on no signals where needed
I cannot imagine any aurthority putting a give way point that close to a turn off.
And the bottom line? If you are turning right across oncoming traffic, you give way.
:A:AI like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -
That's an idiotic layout and I'd lay the blame squarely with whoever came up with that.
However the sign clearly states that oncoming traffic has priority, which muddies the waters somewhat.
Did the crash take place after the build-out and were there cars parked up similarly to how they are in the picture. If the answer to both question is yes then it can be reasonably argued that the presence of parked cars AND a build out means that the taxi driver should reasonably expect cars on the wrong side of the road.0
