DW gets annoyed at me because I'm always doing *something* when we watch a film whether it's catching up on correspondance via email, writing cards, making lists, knitting or flicking through a cookbook. I find it quite boring to only watch TV and I only really watch it to appease her; if it were up to me we'd sit in silence all evening with books/scientific journals or the whir of my sewing machine.

i rarely find a program/film that engages me totally, i am always flicking through cook books, on the internet, or browsing one of these forums.

is there anybody reading this who hasn't jumped up during advert breaks and is now considering giving it a go?

Fortunately for the ad-break workaholics, the BBC now have breaks between programmes where they run trailers for forthcoming features. You can get a lot done in these intervals, too.

These become as boring as commercials, especially as they repeat the same ones over and over again. I'm totally fed up with the "filler" that tells you about licence renewal - I'm just hoping that one day they change it so that the toddler actually eats the dog's dinner.

:) I thought it was only me who did this. I've been quite poorly over the last six months and I find by doing 'advert housework' I ensure I don't overdo it!!

    Hi kittycat,

As your thread has dropped down the board I've added it to the existing one on the same topic to keep the replies together.

Have you noticed how long some ad breaks are - especially on weekends and after a certain time of the day (prime time eves)?

Some are almost as long as ten minutes

Now I've recently noticed this when I pop over to friends and we're watching something that I've been following on 4od, etc.

It makes me laugh that such programmes like 'The Big Bang Theory' (which really makes cry with laughter, big time!) is actually 15-18 minutes per episode, but gets padded out to 30 minutes on TV. :rotfl:
And TBBT isn't the only one.

Has anyone noticed that normal terrestrial channels are increasingly becoming like cable channels in nature: -
    1. opening title credits
    2. then ads, then
    3. *under 10 mins of the programme/film
    4. then ads
    5. then repeat steps 3. and 4. until...

    6. end credits :p

I would love 'catch-up telly' but until then only watch selected programmes. Tbh, would rather be on MSE!
Like many others, I jump up and sort packed lunches, empty dishwasher etc. I'm trying to lose weight so I try to include a quick dash upstairs with the 'things to be put away pile' from the bottom of the stairs. If I don't complete the task, I run upstairs again at the next break!:):o

It makes me laugh that such programmes like 'The Big Bang Theory' .... is actually 15-18 minutes per episode, but gets padded out to 30 minutes on TV.

And the other thing that gets me even more annoyed is the type of reality documentary (like the hospital programs) where they have more than one storyline running and keep swapping from one to the other.

Each time they do a swap, they do a detailed recap of what went on last time they visited that scene, as if the viewer has memory retention of only 5 minutes.

On ITV1 running a big series of this type of programme, a one-hour programme is actually 46 minutes screen time without the ads, so they can reduce this by several more minutes by structuring the programme into a series of scenes where they can do recaps.

Unfortunately, it's not only ITV and the commercial channels that make programmes this way, the BBC do it, too.

    - oooohh! - and what about all the recaps in Come Dine With Me, Four in a Bed and Coach Trip every time there is a commercial break!

So true, before each ads, they do a "coming up" for 5 mins of what will be coming up in the 15minutes after the ads....very irritating waste of our time
