The V5 reg doc was completed and signed by both of us and I hope that he has sent his portion off as I have mine ( recorded delivery)

    Hi.

You shouldn't have sent anything off.......recorded delivery or not. If you both completed the V5 correctly, then only he has to send off the part that you filled in with your address and signed. You should have been given the New Keeper's Supplement which you just keep, no need or point in sending that to anyone.

If the V5 does not arrive you can apply for a New V5 in your name via the DVLA (or your local DVLA office if you have one).

About the receipt......no harm in asking for one but if the vendor isn't in compliant mood then trying to force the issue is unlikely to work. Receipts are next to useless with second-hand cars, even from dealers. The main thing is that you own it, don't get hung up on receipts.

A good tip is always to retain a printed copy of an original advert when buying a car........that, matched up to bank statements showing that you paid out a similar sum and telephone records would be all the proof of purchase ever needed if push came to shove.

A hand written receipt isn't proof of anything. You could get your next door neighbour to write one for you, a stranger in the street even. It carries no weight whatsoever.

    I am a little confussed.

Do you mean that it being handwritten, rather ,presumably, than typed, makes it invalid?

I would have thought the seller's signature would have been the important factor.

I will be totaly frank and say that Gordon is 100% correct the hand receipt would mean nothing in any court even with a witness signiture on it.

As for resale value just look at others on the market nearer the time you are ready to sell.

    Why is that?

Handwritten, handtyped...whatever. It's a private sale and anyone could come up with a "receipt" in seconds. Including having "witnesses"! It holds no weight and proves nothing lol

Anybody can write and type !

The only reciepts worth keeping are ones from shops and business

Fair enough. Makes buying anything substantial for cash pretty unwise then.

With private sale's that is the risk you take, unfortunately.

Yeah sure, get a receipt from the seller, but your proof of purchase is the set of keys he gave you and the V5 in your name. If anything goes wrong, a scrap of paper as a receipt/proof of purchase holds about the same weight as your monthly shopping list.

Hey sorry to crash the thread, I'm due to sell a car over the weekend and was going to write out a receipt stating the price, date, sold as seen etc ~(its a spares or repair sale)
Is it not worth writing one then?

It's really of no consequence one way or the other.

Personally, I think it's polite when selling a car to ask the buyer if they would like a receipt.....and if they want one give them one.

More importantly, make sure that if your purchaser is a scrappy that they fill out the correct section and give it TO YOU to send off. Never let anyone take your whole document away.

yes by all means write a receipt,2copies, make sure that the date and TIME are on both plus any other wording you want, both people sign both copies,
the only rael protection this gives you is if the person goes off and gets speeding/parking tickets before swansea update the new keeper details
