Paid £35 for a 063 battery for the Fiesta, I fitted it myself takes less than ten minutes and is easy to do. Just make sure you follow the negative first advise probably the most important safety thing when it comes to working with cars apart from the use of safe jacks.

The alarm will go off on some cars when you disconnect the battery. I know my vectra you need to put the ignition key on the 2 nd position before disconnecting to prevent this

and even more entertainingly, on audis the central locking activates & locks the doors when you connect the new battery

I agree with Rossy, its easier than changing a wheel on most cars!

And shamefuly most people now call the AA/RAC to change the spare over.... Not just women either!

I recently paid about £100 fitted for a battery for a BMW convertable, a lot, but phoned around and could not get much cheaper, can't remeber the details, but the battery is an anti vibration one, also having an electric roof the 12v system is best kept live whilst changing, otherwise apparently the motors get out of sync.

Because the entire car body/chassis is connected to the Negative terminal, it's called negative earth.

If you touch the positive terminal first, there's a risk of a mild shock from the cars bodywork.... So as Jase1 says, negative terminal first ;)

Nah, I'd be very surprised if anyone could notice a 12V shock.

The reason is you go positive off last/on first is because if you put spanner on the positive with the negative already connected and the other end of the spanner touches the bodywork you get a big sparky short circuit.

That will make you jump but probably do no damage but if you are really clever you can get a gold ring between the spanner and bodywork in which case you end up with a spectacular burn, a blob of gold on the floor and a very cross OH when she finds out what happened to your wedding ring
