I'd expect to pay between £30 and £100.

You could tell people their battery is infected with a virus and needs to be reformatted...... Most people would believe you too.

Such is the utter mindless stupidity of our nation.

Yeah, mine had that problem. Bloody nuisance. Worms had got into the battery apparently.
Why can't they stay underground where they belong.

They like the lead....... They smell it as the car passes over and they follow it... Then as you sleep they climb into the engine bay and seek out the battery, they then locate the vent holes and make their way inside, where they reproduce. Eventually your battery cannot cope with the foreign organic material and gives up.... It's the primary cause of battery failures!!!!!!11111

The alarm will go off on some cars when you disconnect the battery. I know my vectra you need to put the ignition key on the 2 nd position before disconnecting to prevent this

Its an easy job just make sure you get the right one and check you have terminal right way around. You might need some grease for the terminals

You might need radio codes I think you can get a cigarette lighter thing that can help there, haven't done this myself

also car might be sluggish for 30 miles due engine managment

Yeah it's easy enough to fit. Just a few pointers:

    1) Buy from a local factor, and make sure that you know what the size is first before you head down (and phone up to check). You don't want to be checking outside the door of the shop.

    2) Negative off first, positive on first -- very important.

If you go down the self-fit route, the factor will often be able to advise on the best type of battery, and possibly a larger-capacity one that will nonetheless fit. If you get your local garage to do it, you can't guarantee that you'll get the best one for the job, and you'll pay more.

Because the entire car body/chassis is connected to the Negative terminal, it's called negative earth.

If you touch the positive terminal first, there's a risk of a mild shock from the cars bodywork.... So as Jase1 says, negative terminal first ;)

The scrap value of any normal car battery will be £8-£15 alone these days.

So some prices you guys are quoting look very low and are excepional value or are old stock or are carp. Probably a mixture.
