Incontinence wear for three year old

A relative was told that when her disabled child was three years old she would be eligible for incontinece wear (eg pull up pants) from The NHS - Scotland. Now the child is three and still doubly intontinent. Her mum has tried all the usual routes HV and the hospital etc but no one seems to know.

At her special nursery class they insist on the provision of expensive pull up pants and the cost is nearly crippling. Who could the child's mother approach for a definite answer? Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Many thanks

In England you can ask the district nurse to do an assessment to see if you're eligible for incontience products on the NHS. I don't know how it works in Scotland though.
The funding comes through the PCTs in England so it may be worth contacting your local Primary Care Trust

In most areas it is not until a child reaches 4 years that they are eligible for a continence assessment, which is usually (but not always) carried out by the health visitor or a childrens continence nurse. What is supplies varies from area to are, and may not be pull ups.

I don't know about Scotland, but when my daughter was 3 my HV organised for her to have free nappies. There was no assessment done, she just asked if she was still wearing nappies and if she was we could get them for free.

We had Pampers nappies delivered in huge boxes every month or so, but they were just 'normal' nappies - not pull-ups. She's 13 now and finally stopped wearing nappies at around...ummm 5 years old I think so things may have changed in that time.

If the HV doesn't know (which I'm surprised about!) then I'd suggest tracking down an incontinence service in a hospital or getting in touch with the disabled children's team within the county council.

Middle son had to see the continence nurse (referred by health visitor) where she did an assessment....he then got provided with free nappies, pull ups were not an option.

Youngest son was referred for free nappies via his paediatrician..again only nappies and not pull ups.

These were delivered approx every 6 weeks.

Unfortunately, I can't remember the age the boys were but I think it may have been around the age of 3 ish, I know they were definately pre school anyway.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.
  • If you still can't get answers why not go to the top - acting chief exec of NHS Scotland is Derek Feeley

what health board does your friend fall under?
It's worth contacting the health board as they control the funding for your area so should know what they are able to provide/are paying for.
The contact details for all Health board can be found here:

  • Thank you again for all the helpful replies. The Health Board is NHS Lothian. After joolzred helpful suggestion we sent an email to Mr Feeley. Hopefully there will be a positive response but, if not, it's good to know of other channels. It is also good to know that we are not alone in struggling with disability.

    TLhank you so mucy.:A
