they are really heavy. apparently it cracked as all the weight was on the middle of the glass i.e one pain of the double as it was not fitted correctly

To be honest it doesn't matter why it cracked its the fact that its cracked, toughend safety glass shouldn't crack, heads should roll if it have a BS mark.
The BS mark is a sign/standard to assure people that the units are safe and of a standard ...It makes a mockery of the BS standards.....

At the very least replace BOTH units with toughend glass units and if it were me I would be speaking to guy that sold them to you and then health and safety as it really is bad news for everyone if companies are making sub standard units..

Funnily enough i had someone round tonight who works in the trade and said the same thing as you and also told me where i can get some safety glass from as he commented on mine being cracked and said the same as you if they were safety glass they would not crack

he said he got his friend them at £45 each. seems very reasonable.

well i am obviously not happy about the situation and i am going to get both bits of glass replaced on the safe side. not such a bargain after all.

The BS marks seem to be on the inside of the glass. they don't look like stickers.

so there is 100% no chance of a safety glass having a stress crack in it? but instead it would shatter instead of cracking?

Correct, its the same principle as a toughend car windscreen where in an accident it would shatter into hundreds of small square pieces of glass with no long jagged points which is what could happen to your door units if a child ran into them ........

Best to change both like you say.......

i have checked the markings on the glass and they are on the outside of the glass and can be scratched off. one has half worn off already

i think this just adds to the fact that they are dodgey

Trading Standards , Health and Safety executive should be notified TBH..Just think if some poor child ran into a door with these units in...

I've seen this before and everytime poeple have bought via the web from sites in this country. They buy cheap doors with supposedly toughend safety glass in and conforming to building regulations and when fitted the building inspector condemns them..

Anothe common problem is people buying doors which have 4-6-4 sealed units in 44 mm thick doors and fitting them in a new door frame, they think thats ok but it doesn't meet building regulations..If they buy the door and fit it into an existing frame thats fine but as soon as they replace the door and frame its a whole new ball game..

Any news on who made the units?
